Well, I applied to Maynooth for their English course and I have to go up there Saturday the 31st of March for a written test. They say they can't reveal what the test is about beforehand but does anyone know? Will I have to learn how many toilets Shakespeare sat on or is it just an aptitude test?
    Cheers

    Hello!

I'm not sure this is exactly what you're looking for but according to the admissions site here it says:

'The tests for MH003, MH107, MH109, MH110, MH111, MH113, MH114*, MH115, MH116, MH117, MH119, MH406 will take the form of “essay-type” questions related to the subject that they intend to study. For preparation applicants can read up on relevant material in the prospectus and also the Departmental website.'

I imagine that it's the departments method of assessing your writing skills before you start the course to ensure you're up to it.

I wouldn't be extremely worried or anything, it does seem to be common for Mature Students to go through this.

Then again I'm not sure if that is the right information, I can't imagine that you would have to 'learn' too much before hand, because you haven't studied English at Uni they can't ask you sit an exam.

I presume you rang the department? Maybe you could try the admissions dept they might be able to relieve any anxiety/worry.

Best of Luck, I hope you succeed and you enjoy your time in Maynooth!

    *MH114 = English

Also sitting at NUIM on Saturday for Law. Anybody else out there sat this "exam" in the last few years..I'd love to get your experiences. I'm aware it's probably not something you can't actually study for, but an idea of the topics may help get my train-of-thought in order before Saturday.
Getting nervous now. Havn't sat an exam in nearly 20 years.

Don't worry too much about these exams. From what I have heard, they are not difficult! Just prepare yourself by making sure you know why you are doing this course and the benefits it will bring to you, for what ever reason. You can't study for them as someone said above, you haven't done it in college yet! Don't panic!

    Hey all!

I am also sitting a test for Anthropology on Saturday (this Saturday), so the nerves are kicking in. Now I haven't been to school in a while, I'm now 23 so I applied as a mature student.

My main worry is the essay type question. Should I brush up my skills on essay writing, maybe learn the format?

Haven't had to write one since leaving cert English in 2007 or so. I have dyslexia so I hope that doesn't hinder my abilities! Good luck everyone!

    Regards Dave.

Hey all, I am a second year History and Celtic studies mature student at NUIM. Dont sweat it about the test!!!! I didnt do one myself but basically it is too see if you can write an essay.

the essay must have an introduction, middle and conclusion. in the intro say what you are going to say, then say it and in the conclusion say that you have said it. I hope that makes sense lol.

Also when you go to interview, ask about the essay writing course and ask if you can go on it. it is only for a week usually in June and it well worth it. I did that course and it has helped me tremendously.

Also can I recommend picking celtic studies as your third subject? you never know you might keep it like I did. It is the hardest subject to fail :o and the lecturers are so helpful and approachable unlike some other departments!!!!!!

Also dont forget to join the Mature Students Society (I am currently the secretary!!) as it is a great way to meet other mature students and also to get advice from students who have been there longer.

Wishing you all the best with your entrance exams

    Fiona

How strict are they about the essay, I haven't done that type of test since school days and wondering do I need to brush up on essays again before hand, and Will the essay be about the subject you applied for(History etc..)
or a general essay to just check your grammar & writing skills.

    Thanks..

As in tomorrow? I'm not doing mine (law too) till the 13th April, a few hints and tips would be great. :D

    Best of luck!

So does anyone who has done this essay-test over the last few weeks have any advice or tips?
    Be greatly appreciated.

I am to sit it this Saturday and haven't written an essay since I was 17. My grammar and spelling is dire due to lack of needing it to not be, or practice.
Fairly worried about it to be honest.

    Thanks :))

I sat the entrance test last year for social science. my partner did also for this year and he will be sitting the one for law on sat. He has got an interview from the Social Science one. The advice I gave his was to make sure the structure is good. Intro, main and conclusion. Since I have been there since sept, that is an important part of an essay. It would be understood if you have some spelling mistakes because you may feel under pressure for that hour and might rush a bit. During my xmas exams I had many spelling mistakes and the grammer was bad because of the pressure of the situation. But I made sure the structure was right and my points were in there and my results were brillant.
Dont put too much pressure on yourself. You'll be fine
