Currently have a Boss GT6 which Im beginning to get sick of. I have a nice amp but whenever I turn the GT6 on, it kills the tone of the amp.

My question is, are any of the multieffects I mentioned in the title capable of just putting whatever effect you choose on top of the amp sound, as opposed to changing it totally with modelled preamp sounds?

I know I could just go for separate effects pedals but Ive always preferred having a multieffects box.

Does the GT10 have a specific option to turn amp models off and just use the effects? I had thought about sticking with Boss but my head gets turned easily when it comes to gear!

Yes, that's exactly how I use mine

Plus it does the 4 cable method very well.

    Brilliant, thanks lads.

If anyone has experience with any of the others I mentioned, advice would be appreciated. Particularly interested in the M9 and Nova System.

Does the M9 even model amps?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭**Vai**

Now that you mention it, I dont think it does. Which is what Im looking for really.

After looking into the tonelab it seems to be the same story as the GT6, no option to turn amp modelling off. I'd be very interested to see if the systems that have that option actually do it right. Im not gonna get a better clean sound from a modelled effect so the M9 or GT10 seem to be worth a shot.

The nova doesn't do modelling either.

    What's your amp?

It might be useful to have a bit of kit that can also model amps and cabs if you need it to, in case your amp dies at a gig...

What's the 4 cable method? In an effect loop? Some kind of stereo business?

It's a way of interlinking your effects processor/board with your amp that, essentially, allows you to have distortions/ODs going in the front end, while the modulation/delay etc get routed through the amp's effects loop. I think.

Involves running a lead from your effects out to the input of your amp's effects loop and an out from there back to your effects and ... sod it, I'm googling.

Its a Carvin Legacy VL100. Funny you should mention it dying, thats exactly what happened at my last gig! Thats the problem with tubes, they dont last forever.

I know what you mean but Im really looking for something that just leaves my amp tone alone and sticks the effects I choose on top of it. The Nova is the front runner right now I think. Or the M9 though Im not too pushed on Line6 stuff from past experiences.

Ah yeah, cool, I get it now. Didn't know multi effect pedals let you do it (I used to do that a lot but I use individual stompboxes).

I think any multi that has its own effects loop.

I have had boss gt-6, line 6 m9 and m13, tc g-major and others but not nova because I read somewhere that the switches work on depress instead of press or however you describe it. I found the m9 &13 modelled drives poor and both units coloured the tone more than I was prepared to put up so I sold them. Pity cos the delays and global tap tempo were fantastic. The boss's drives are even worse but the unit itself is fairly transparent and I still have it. The g-major doesn't colour the tone in a way that I can hear on any of my amps and it has no drives on board, Personally I never heard a drive tone in a multi fx unit that came within a mile of a standalone boxes like xotic ocd etc anyway so it's no loss. G-major wins for me, just add a fcb1010 footboard or whatever. That's my 2p, hope it helps...

Yeah I'd have the G-Major if I could afford it, believe me! Im not so bothered about the Nova switches working on depress, specially when its basically a scaled down G-Major for quarter of the price. The more I hear the Nova sounds, the more Im thinking thats the one. I was willing to try Line6 again after years away from it but what you said is dead right. The drive just doesnt sound right to me.

In guessing you're mixing up the relative affordable g-major with the more expensive g-system ? The g-major can be picked up cheaper than the nova but you would need to shell out a few bob for a foot controller... Anyway you won't go too far wrong with any of the TC products IMHO , best of luck

@Vai: Sorry for digging this up, but did you get the Nova system?

Not just yet, no. A few more important things have come up for my money to be spent on in the meantime. Im sure other folks on here have experience with them though.

I've researched for hours, days, months, maybe even a year or 2 on this very subject. usual youtube clips and forums etc...... For me the sounds that the nova System is producing are just too good to ignore, for the money...especially over the rest. And surely thats why we're even interested in the 1st place... the word " pristine " has been used for the sounds on the nova and I'd have to agree with that. to my ear it just sounds class.

I've seen several on Adverts.ie recently, so I wonder are they keepers or not. I know the videos are very impressive, but most videos that are professionally produced will sound good, more or less, sp. with the likes of Pete Thorn and Andy from PGS playing with them. Those guys can make almost anything sound good.

as someone who's owned a nova, a gt8 and a pod hd500, i can safely say the nova is by far the best of them in most scenarios. sonically superior in everything it has.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭**Vai**

None on adverts at the minute unfortunately.

Sold my GT6 last night so Im ordering the Nova today off thomann. Im like a child at xmas.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,301 ✭✭✭artvandulet

The Nova isnt perfect but none of them are.
If you are in to patch sharing for instance, the nova isnt for you because there isnt the community for it and its not straight forward to do - no TC program to upload patches simply. It can be done though.
The drive section is better than any other multifx unit in that its actually useable, the effects themselves sound really good - especially the delays. It takes some learning but it pays off.

If you are buying a Nova, make sure you buy a midi usb adaptor also, so you can firmware upgrade and backup patches. The G-switch is also very much worth it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭**Vai**

Yeah im gonna get the g switch. Shame theres no way to use the switch and an expression pedal at the same time. Although I did see a guy on youtube with 2 boss fv500 pedals attached to a nova, would love to know how that works. Must look into a midi usb adapter too.

Only drawback to the nova is it can't do the 4 cable method.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,302 ✭✭✭**Vai**

Nova arrived today. Only played it through my practise amp (Roland Cube) but it sounds great, even though I havent figured out how to use it yet. Thanks again for the advice and opinions.

any update on how you are getting along with the nova Vai?

Curious to hear your considered opinion!

Not sure how considered my opinion is but yeah, Im happy with my choice anyway! Still only played it through my cube but the overdrive makes it sound like a Mode Four. Delays and reverbs are awesome as are the modulation effects. Havent messed around with many settings yet so im sure it will only sound better when I do.
There are issues. My main one being having to choose between the G Switch and an expression pedal. Ive gone for the G Switch in the hope I can get used to playing through it without a pedal. You wont get better for the price basically and its very varied in what it can do.
If anyones ordering it from Thomann splash out the extra hundred for the bundle deal they have. Well worth it.
