My first race of the year looking to beat my Dublin Half time of 2:31:31

This race was two laps I didn't know how this would effect me as I never do laps of my runs.

    Lap 1

The first lap went well hitting avg 8:15 min/mile, as planed I kept ahead of the 2h pacers and close too the 1:45 pacers. I kept this up until the there was space between other runners then I slowed down to 8:30 min/mile around mile 4. Seen other runners pushing way too hard I'd pass them then they would pass me I can't recall how many runners did this. I was running my own race not there's. I got passed I never tried to reclaim the place back it just happened as they burned out.

Lap 1 time was 53 mins bang on time

    Lap 2

The second lap did not go as planed, I could feel my right leg cramp up I was in trouble. I knew I had to slow down so gradually slowed down to about 9 min/mile. My leg was cramping more frequently at this stage as I hit the ten mile mark I could say bye to a 1:51 result. At this stage a sub 2 hour half was looking bad. As long as I kept the two hour pacers behind I'd be grand but In my mind they eating into my lead from the first lap, as I was hitting 9:15 min/mile.

The last mile was hard I didn't dare look back to see if the pacers where behind me, One runner was just ahead of me, lad was sweating buckets, I took a bottle from my belt and he asked for a drink of water couldn't refuse a fellow runner. Then I all I heard was 800 METERS TO GO I knew what is was 2 hour pacers behind me oh f*** This was a kick up the arse determined to salvage my goal I dug in and ran to the finish line...

    2012

    Dublin Half Marathon 2:31:31

    2013
    Bohermeen AC Half Marathon
    Goal Time Sub 2 hours
    Result 1:59:10

Overall very happy felt I could do better but these things happen, would like to thank Bohermeen Ac for a great race and a big thanks for all involved.

Its usually mid September and is pretty much there as a preparation race for DCM so definitely do it. Clontarf Half in July is another option, nice flat course.

Should I go all out for the half or take it easy, I was thinking off a 4:30 marathon.

I think Meno would say go all out as it is a race. If you are in good stead training wise, and injury free, go for it.

I think you are well capable of better than 4:30 though. I managed 4:27 off a 1:56 HM last year but I missed 3-4 weeks training due to injury in August and last 10k had to resort to run/walk strategy.

Well, there is no point doing a race if you are not going to race it. 13.1 mile training runs are fine, but why pay for one? ;)

Sub 4hrs.It's a demon that I must banish after two failed attempts. If training goes well though perhaps 3:45 mightn't be out of the question. Too early in year to say yet though, depends on what progress I make between now and June when marathon training will start in earnest.

Third time lucky RedRunner, won't do anything this week as I have a serious case of man flu does not help doing a six day week.

Yeah, take it easy. A few days off never did anyone any harm.

That's me signed up for Boyne 10k on the 5th of May, really looking forward to this race as this is my first home race.
Confident I can get a sub 50 min.

    http://www.boyne10k.ie/downloads/B10K_2013_route.pdf

Big hill at 1k -2k I run this hill on a regular basis, part of the course is under construction. As soon as it is open I will do the course over and over again.

Will follow Hals 10-K Training Guide - Intermediate Program.

    Week 1

After a week off with the flu, I could not wait to get back to training. I'm concentrating on this hill and including it in most off my runs.

    Easy 3.53 Miles @ 9:08=32.05 Avg HR 174 MHR 224

I think those kinds of runs are every bit as important as the ones where you're raring to go.

I know people are different but Avg HR seems a little high for a 3 mile easy run. You sure you are over the man flu completely?

    Day 3

    Did a easy 3.95 miles @9:34 = 37:47
Really tried to keep slow as much as possible. Will be starting gym next week and start swimming so I will be changing my plan to accommodate these in. Feel a bit sore today after my run so I will be taking it easy for the rest of the week.
