I'm in second year of CS&IT .Can anyone tell me the local companies that have taken students for placement this year . I would prefer a placement not based only on java or programming , as these are not my best subjects.
Can anyone give me feedback on what happened on placement and if there was a big difference between different companies . Anything about what was on CV's and how interviews went would also be appreciated.
Tell me everything you know !;)

Hey! I am in third year of CS&IT and I got a placement last summer with IBM in Dublin.

Basically you just have to apply to all the positions open, just search the 'net for summer placements to do with IT. I happened to find the IBM website and saw they were offering placement for one student and happened to get the position!

Mine actually involved no programming or anything like that but the whole thing was great experience, got paid and have a good name on my cv.

Good luck with the hunt! :D

Final Year CS&IT myself. I can't tell from your post if you're referring to summer internships or the actual 3rd Year Professional Experience Programme that's part of the degree, but I'll try and help out here from the latter perspective. Otherwise, Barry above is your only man.

I was on the 3rd Year work placement during the summer. The companies who hired from our class were: IBM, Avaya, Ericsson, Bank of America, Fidelity Investments, Cisco, Attachmate, DERI, Storm Technologies, ESB International and Deloitte. Some of the other companies interviewing were Accenture, Intel, Valeo and SAP.

The full list of companies is here. It's only accessible inside the college, or by using an SSH tunnel, such as one provided by your friendly neighbourhood CompSoc.

I worked as a student developer on my placement, doing mostly Java programming on Linux and UNIX systems. That's what I love doing, so I really enjoyed it.

Every placement is different. Trust me, if you're not good at programming, you probably won't end up with a programming job. There's at least one or two people in our class that don't consider coding to be their strong point, so they ended up in companies doing other, IT-related things that they enjoyed.

Every CV has to conform to a standard template, so you really don't get much headroom there. It's just a few form fields that you fill in on the NUIG registration site. Every time a new company goes up, you get a notification by email. Interviews were entirely based on the company and were especially dependant on who the interviewers were and what their roles were in the companies. A lot of people were interviewed by HR staff, while others (including myself) got technical interviews.

I hope that was of some help to you. Feel free to ask me anything else you want to know about the process. It's probably best to ask me here on this thread so that other people can see it too.

One thing I will say is that, if you can at all, get a summer placement this summer.

The 3rd year placement system is getting extremely competitive. This is due to increasing class sizes (IT is a prime example, also electronic engineering etc affects us), increasing size of OTHER university courses and the fact that the amount of internships fluctuate year on year.

Last year, CosmicFrog can correct me on this, the majority of the students received a placement. Just the other day, we had a meeting with the placement office and they told us that the current rate of placements is only 63% in CS&IT. This is extremely low, especially for IT, and they would have expected in the 80's.

So I would say, if you want a decent placed internship next year, try to get decent results this year (Especially in the biggies such as Programming, Soft.Eng, Comp Sys) and try to get a placement this summer (Easier said than done, I know :P).
