Hi I am looking for advice on speakers and amps for an acoustic gigs.Would the amp I use want to be double the speaker strength...Two 500w speaker would need a 1000w amp,or would I need more than the 1000,as not to be driving the hello outta the amp. Thanks for any advice.I done the usual google search, but the answers to questions posed go into all sort of complicated detail.I am looking for advice in layman terms...thanks..:)

What is the Ohm rating for your speakers? (usually 4 or 8 with tops). You need to match this with the amp you get.
For instance, if your speakers deliver 500w each at 4ohms you need an amp that will deliver the same. Lots of the time amp manufacturers like to throw out big numbers on their packaging but are only showing what power the amp delivers unimpeded. (so the amp you are looking at maybe only delivers 1000w at 2, or even 0 ohms, which will only drive your 500w at 4ohm speakers at about half capacity)

TLDR - Make sure that you match the Ohms as well as the watts when choosing an amp
