Coughlin having a great game. Hard to make a judgement on the rest because we haven't really had the ball for any length of time.

Must be near half time. Anyone mind giving a bloke who can't see the match a very brief run down of who's looking good/might be pushing for the 23 vs. Wales?

As a former back-rower I will never let on to know anything about front row play except that they are all mad but great craic, but in fairness to Bent, he was getting no support behind him, looked to me like DT almost folded behind him on a couple of scrums.

I bow to your intimate knowledge, however he still gives me the impression that he is about half as strong as a Hines/Botha/Ryan etc

If he were really Irish they wouldnt be quite so blunt.

They droned on endlessly about the fact he was "brought" in.

Think Marshall is also doing a good job. Paddy was doing well with the boot in the first quarter, putting it behind them very smartly.

WTF???? really Irish??? get over yourself son. You don't have to eat spuds & dribble into your pint to be Irish!

? I'm not sure but I don't think the poster was having a pop at Bent. I'm pretty sure he was making the point that the commentator has gripe with him over the manor in which he's made it into the Irish squad.

Again, don't understand this.. why would Toner be behind the TH and not Stevenson?

True. But he is a mercenary, condottiere, gun for hire. Which leaves him more open to criticism than most.
I dont blame the guy for taking an opportunity made to him though. But still only 'Irish' due to the financial incentive.

Very hard to say because although we started well, our scrum has been mangled, and that has been the main talking point.

Marshall has looked good. Some good box-kicks and nice pass and urgency. I'd have him on.

Luke Fitz has looked good but needs to see more ball.

Coughlan has been immense but isn't going to start ahead of Heaslip.

Stevenson looked very hungry for work.

Henshaw good under the high ball.

Both centres were very strong defensively.

I'm intrigued to see when Madigan and Keatley will come on.

    76th minute.

Coughlin is playing great stuff, as are Luke Fitz and Paul Marshall.

I'm particularly impressed with how Coughlin and Marshall are dealing with a retreating scrum, if the main team did that last year against England it would have made life easier.

I'd like to see us using our outside backs a bit more.

I almost feel so bad for bent that I wouldn't mind if Fitzpatrick came on and had a shocker. Almost :)

    About half as strong... interesting.

I'm no expert on the dark arts of the front row but physics tells me that it'd be pretty damn tough to get 20 odd stone working effectively in a scrum situation when the 20 stone is based around a 7 foot frame

Im completly biased, but does anyone else think that James Coughlan is head an shoulders above any other player out there?

He's doing nothing fancy, but everything he's doing is effective :)
I do.....but he's not flexible enough someone told me :)

Looked like number 5 behind him there in the half time highlights to me, I'm open to correction.

Coughlan looks classy and Fitzgerald looks experienced. I wish these games were longer....only 40 mins left:(

I'm just watching the series of scrums around the 35/38th minute now and Stevenson was definitely the TH lock behind bent

They could be changing it around with the prospect of one of the locks covering the bench ahead of DOC and having to cover both sides of the scrum

    Court for Kilcoyne?

Hope Bent has a better 2nd half.

Looks like it, Bent still on.

Have to say Coughlin is having a stormer. He is cleaning up brilliantly behind a retreating scrum and is generally everywhere. Really good performance from him.

Noting changes there. He has been one of the best eights in Europe this season

    Strange one that.

Court on you can only assume was a pre-match plan to give Kilcoyne and him half a game each.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 13,264 ✭✭✭✭Fireball07

    Hon Court!

Pity Killer didn't get more of a chance to carry.....interesting to see what the scrums will be like.

Big wind against us in the 2nd half, not the best situation for 'play it safe and defend the lead Kidneyball' tactics
