The ariva will support multi satellite set ups but you will only get UK freesat when a dish is pointed at astra 2 (sky dish) . I'd respectfully suggest that maybe you start a new thread so you can get answers of a more general nature for your proposed set up . I reckon you would get more info that way such as alternatives to the 250 as this thread is specifically for the 250 model.

    Hope this helps

    Thanks Tony!

Does anybody know if I could tune in European channels also with Dish pointed at the Astra sats for Freesat? I'd love to get some of them. Think I read you could. Can the Ariva do that also?

    Thanks!

Thanks Iba, have been googling this. I have a null modem cable, but cannot seem to find the software for loading the firmware. THe link on Ferguson site does not work. If anyone has done this on the 250 please let me know what software you used.

The instructions for recovery are in this very thread.

In that post it contains the erom uploader software. You also need the latest firmware for your box which is on the ferguson website. Firmware between 150 and 250 models are not interchangable. Only pick the firmware for your model box.

The only reason ASH appears on the box is when you flash the firmware for a different box on the Ariva 250.

I see NewcamD mentioned in the thread so you obviously flashed a patched firmware for the wrong box or flashed an allshares file incorrectly.

Either way you can recover the box once you follow the instructions. You need a NULL modem cable, not a serial cable, not a USB to Serial, not any other cable. Full instructions are in the post linked above, including a link to the right cable. You will also need a PC with a null modem port.

The part where it says turn box on means flick the switch at the back.

Thanks a lot STB. I got sorted in the end. The problem i was having was i was using a null modem cable with a serial to USB adapter as i had no serial port on my laptop. Today i disconnected the USB adapter and just used the null modem on an old laptop. Got another error this time. Changed the com port windows settings to match the Ferguson software settings (baud rate and parity) and hey presto it worked. Wife missed three hours of Jeremy Coyle this morning, so im in the dog house.

I did not flash the wrong firmware. I was trying to get the internet working on it and was changing the network settings when it died. It had been working with this firmware for a couple of weeks. It was a patched version as that was the first one if found. Back to unpatched now. Think i'll leave the internet.

    Thanks for your help.

Glad you got it sorted - STB is a fountain of all knowledge.

As 4 the internet - as far as I remember, I just plugged in my LAN cable and it worked; I didnt have to change any settings at all

Great stuff. Yeah those USB to R232 cables are very hit and miss as they dont contain the drivers for the various operating systems (you might be lucky with XP) but i have yet to see one that works that doesn't cost €40.

Re the internet. Your router may be the issue. Is DHCP enabled on the router ? As I said earlier when you select DHCP on the Ariva to turn it on, hit the back button on the remote and it will automatically prompt your router to give it the Ariva an IP address.

I might try it again when i get a chance, i was using the patched V1.21 firmware, i'm now on the unpatched V1.21. The router is using DHCP. When i turned DHCP on and hit back button, it displayed a message saying 'configuring DHCP' or something like that for about 1 minute, then it says something like 'switching DHCP off'. I'm sure its something in the router, i have a few deviced connecting in the house and they all get their IP from the router, so i'm not sure of the problem.

    Hey guys,

I'm thinking of buying this box (or possibly 2 or 3). I'll be connecting one of them via HDMI to a 1080i widescreen tv. Now I cannot change the aspect ratio on the tv from anything other than 16:9 while viewing the HDMI source. So I'd like to know if this box itself automatically changes between 16:9 and 4:3 pillarbox as channel or programme dictates? Does it have the option to allow this for terrestrial and satellite?

If I get a second box it would be connected via SCART to a 4:3 SD tv. I'm wondering if there is an option to have 16:9 images cropped to 4:3, so as not to have letterboxing or distortion? Something like pan & scan?

My current SD box has the former but not the latter feature (and I know of boxes vice versa), so I want to make sure this box has the option for both! Actually, if someone could list out the options in the picture aspect ratio settings that'd be great! Thanks in advance!

Just took a look and it has AUTO,4:3 Letterbox,4:3 Pan and Scan,4:3 Combined,16:9 letterbox, 16:9 Pan and scan and 16:9 Combined.

Cheers Tony. That's more options than I expected. So the cropping to 4:3 is definately there. I can only assume one of those other options is for auto pillarbox when needed, when in viewing in 16:9 (ie. when watching CNBC or something)?

It's one of the main reasons I've been slow to upgrade my current box (8 years old) as I know the feature is not on Sky boxes (those just send a signal to the tv to change ratio, and in doing so, squishes the whole EPG with it) as might be the case with many other boxes, I don't know? I just can't stand watching 4:3 programmes stretched to widescreen, and I'm surprised at how many people don't actually notice a difference!

Guys here is a link to latest 1.21B6 firmware and free channel list for the Ariva 250 combo http://www.mediafire.com/?lmah8j5ulc93a4v "How to guide" is here http://www.mediafire.com/view/?69yp35sijci8dly I'd advise upgrading only if you really feel the need to and follow the instructions to the letter otherwise you may make your box unusable.

    What does this update fix?
Recently when I play a YouTube video just as it loads the box restarts.. Any one else this happens to?

Is it possible to have the usb stick (used for media / timeshift / DVR), along with the wifi dongle to be connected to a USB hub on the rear USB port, or do they each need their own port? In which case will those tiny wifi nubs fit on the front port with the hatch closed? Or maybe one with an antenne would be better as I've read here that the signal isn't great on those sometimes?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24 Colmos85

I upgraded, Thanks Tony for the channel list and all included.
The upgrade fixed all the web apps and added a few also. This upgrade is the best so far as everything seems to work. :D

Post #963 on page 65 of this thread has the instructions for the ASH problem, is this update causing problems for anyone else? Can I go straight from my current 6 month old version to this one without having to install ones in between?

I don't have a null modem or a pc/laptop with a com port. I also downloaded the latest EPROM software from the ferguson site and my antivirus software is saying the ariva_3606_eromupgrade.exe has a virus and won't extract or run it from the zip file. Total disaster.

Anyone know where I can get a version of the Erom upgrade software without a virus?
Anyone know where I can buy a null modem?

    Help!!

If you got the Eprom from the Ferguson website it will not have a virus. If your anti-virus software is saying there is a virus on it (I think that this is called a false positive) just turn off your anti-virus to enable download.

Cable - Maplins, PCworld, Harvey Normans, Petes, Ebay, Amazon, lying around an office, ur local recycling center etc etc

I had the same problem recently. I think it was more to do with me messing around with the settings than a software issue. Had been working fine for a few weeks. As Iba said, you'll need to reload firmware using cable. The biggest problem you'll have is finding a PC with a serial port. They haven't put these in PCs/laptops for a few years. The USB to serial converters don't work. Let us know how you get on, we can help if your stuck. The eprom loader from Ferguson works, so, as suggested, disable anti virus and download.

Ok so got my 250 reflashed and back working. I bought an Rs232 9 pin null modem cable in maplins for 18.50 - total rip off by the way. I managed to revive an old laptop which has a serial port and ran the software to load the latest EPROM. The load process is really slow over the serial cable, 10-15 mins.

I won't be relying on anyone else's channel list again. It's also hard to believe that a consumer product like this doesn't have a factory reset button on it. It would be difficult for most people to have the know how and/or equipment required to unbrick this box.

One last thing, the sales guys i talked to in PC World carrickmines have never heard of a Null Modem- bit of a generation gap I think...

You can tell by the feedback on the product if it's the right item or not, a lot of Chinese sellers may be dodgy but you can easily tell the difference by looking at the feedback and product reviews

Well I doubt I'd get next day delivery on a Saturday ? Besides, it's no fun for anyone when the tv isn't working, especially with 3 small kids on a wet winter day. I would have made one myself but I needed to get it working quickly.. Crazy price to pay though, you're right but I was desperate!

Why not try bringing it back. Say it was the wrong one. I have a couple of these, ill give you one.

That may well be but it screwed up my box and I followed the instructions to the letter and paid the price for it.. Once bitten, twice shy. Not casting blame on anyone other than myself, just sharing my experience and learning from it.

More importantly though. Why don't these boxes have a simple factory reset feature - hard to believe this can't be included in this day and age?? Great little box but not so clever in this area.
