Identify beetle type insect

    Hello,

    Can anyone identify the insect in the photo attached?

    Its a beetle type insect that does have wings, approx 1 inch in length. A friend of mine has an infestation of them. Based in Melbourne if that helps. Thanks.

    Have a look at them from an angle apart from their belly and see do they match any of these guys:

    Are you assuming there aren't any active zoology researchers / knowledgeable enthusiasts in Ireland?

    We narrowed it down to at least the family and possibly genus of beetle, that's not bad for readers of an Irish zoology forum.

    I can confirm this is correct. They are Soldier Beetles.

    However, it wasn't so much a problem infestation. They had suddenly appeared because they were breeding and larvae were hatching. They had all gone within a matter of days.

    Well, I was guilty of assumption, I admit.
    I think I assumed that any entomological experts here would be more familiar with insects endemic to Ireland.
    I do think it's reasonable to assume, though, that a Melbourne exterminator would be well able to identify them.
    I was impressed when another poster ID'd them.
