Do Irish males dress well?

but why is that a woman's concern?
It's not women against men. If I see a salesman in scruffy and creased suit and dirty shoes, I think they are a bit lazy and maybe somebody else would be more reliable and if I see woman in sloppy work clothes I get the same impression.

I don't really go for conventionally good looks in men but I do prefer the ones who look semi presentable. Personally I detest tracksuits or men advertising their favourite club or band outside sporting events. I'm not trying to dress up my partner but I will suggest him to wear different clothes or shoes if they don't suit him. Luckily he knows when suit or more dressed up look is appropriate.

no i have no problem with that but what i have a problem with is that you expect certain individuals to dress accordingly to group trends which undermines the individuals whole sense of individuality. if you don't like how someone dresses then don't date them?

how someone dresses is very much an expression of who you are

I never suggested men should be following trends and dressing in a way that goes against their personality.

But I don't think a man's personality would ever completely limit him to scruffy, poorly fitted clothes.

I don't know what kind of personality he'd have to have for me to say "jesus, you're right, those navy trouser pants and that lovely shirt look terrible on you, don't look right at all, back to the tracksuit bottoms with you!"

Mind you these issues are not exclusively Irish; I am actually form Italy and while you do see a bit more well dressed people down there, you also see a LOT of this:

    http://lannifriends.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/s-r-tamarro.jpg

Not to mention all Italian women obsessing about low waisted jeans, with the obvious muffin-top effect.

Ma che cazzo!!! But this guy would be known as a "coatto" ? I don't think all Italian guys were like that when I lived there. One thing I did notice in Italy is a lot of people would wear basic/subtle clothes, but dress well... You obviously had your stereotype with white trousers on too!

For me the most consistent best dressed people are the older generation 60's 70's and on and sadly generations that have passed. They always seem to take so much more pride in their appearance, bought good quality and took care of their clothes. Anytime I have attended a mass the older men are always dressed well, good leather shoes well polished, nice trousers and shirt, good coat or jacket and maybe a nice hat, glove or scarf and rarely a logo to be seen. Clothes weren't bought impulsive, they saved up for their eg. Winter coat and it would be bought to last many years not a season or two.

I think that the guys aged 20-30ish are more fashion forward but can only afford the Penney's versions! The guys aged 30-40 are less adventurous but are more likely to spend and have good quality clothes.

Clothes shopping for males in Ireland is a joke, I went home for xmas this year and somehow forgot all my day to day clothes, (i only had my suit and two shirts). So i decided to treat myself and buy a few bits for the wardrobe. I went to the Whitewater in Newbridge and only managed to buy one outfit that i would actually wear. A pair of nice chinos and a shirt. There is absolutely no variety in clothing in Ireland, Whereas in manchester where i now live i could fill my wardrobe time and time again with nice clothes. Everything in Ireland is either geared towards sports (jerseys , hoodies etc) or the quality is terrible. Penneys actually does a decent range of clothing at the moment but the quality isnt in the material that they would last. I also agree that "to the pub" t-shirts et should be banned!!

I think a majority of Irish guys don't dress great. I don't like how tracksuits have become standard day wear for a significant percentage and how jeans and a shirt are perceived as only to be worn for "dressing up" occasions.

Someone mentioned either here or in a similar thread in the Gentleman's Club forum that there is a theory that some guys may feel their masculinity could be undermined if they showed an interest in being well dressed/well turned out and/or be subject to being slagged/ridiculed so that's why they go for the generic, unnoticed blokey bloke oversized jeans/teeshirt ensemble to not stand out. I think that theory carries some weight.

Others here have knocked chain stores such as River Island etc for their clothes/shoes too which I would disagree. I think you do not have to spend lots of money to look well dressed. This does not mean you have to shop in BT/Gant/Harvey Nichols. I do most of my shopping in places like Zara, River Island, Tom Tailor, Debenhams, TK Maxx AND even Jack'n'Jones (great for casual wear imo) and buy stuff that never breaks the bank and often get compliments from girls and guys (straight and gay!) (and I've never spend more than 100 euro for an individual clothing item or shoes apart from leather jackets/winter coats). It doesn't have to cost a lot to look well turned out. I just think it is not a priority for a lot of guys.

I think it depends on age group really. Younger males of a more modern era tend to put more effort into their appearance than older men.

What is the hatred towards tracksuits?

Why would u wear going out clothes when ur lying on the couch watching tv after work or going down to shop?
Do you not exercise during week?

Im a full time working 24 male and amongst my friends it seems

    Tracksuit after work(during week)
Then going out clothes for weekend

I always wear jeans but that's just me. I'm a 22 year old student so not the same. Then if I'm dressing up I put on a belt and nice top or shirt.

That's the thing. I don't wear tracksuits around. I don't really have this mind-gulf difference between "going-out clothes" and "daily clothes". That's the thing I find weird and leads to the ugliness I believe of both circumstances.

Everyones situation is diferent i grew up playing soccer alot so tracksuits are a norm for me during the week.
To be honest i dont pay any attention to what people wear to be honest.

Fashion is something so ugly we have to change it every 6 months-oscar wilde

Then what are you doing in the fashion & appearance forum? I mean you're welcome, it seems an odd place to be for someone with no interest in it.

What do the ladies think of the One Direction/Olly Murs and this Geordie Shore look on guys?Seems to be hard to find clothes without it

I don't think that look is great for anyone over 23, personally. As for that's all what's in the shops, well, it's the trend in the shops, but there's still classics out there, stuff that won't date as quickly.

It only works on teenagers tbh..

For me I would say David Beckham has casual style down to a tee.

Beckham is way overrated, he is incredibly good looking which for him is 90% of the battle I'd say he could make return to pub tshirt look appealing. The thing is I've never seen any picture of him in any interesting casual gear.

I think when a style come in for men it all you see in the shops. They don't have the selection women have. Sometimes it's check shirts and others it stripped jumpers!

If you compare the streets of London to the streets of Dublin, I think Dublin is seriously lagging behind and that goes for both men and women (but... particularly men :o sorry lads!)

To be fair though, I've gone out shopping with my boyfriend and Irish men have such a tiny choice when it comes to clothes.

Like if they wanted to dress well, you've got your specific tailor shops (cost a bomb), designer men's shops (cost a bomb), Topman and Jack & Jones.

Even the Topman stores are crap here in comparison to England! Half the collection is made up of overly priced t-shirts with stupid pictures on the front and a bunch of coloured hoodies. That's about as far as we've got.... Coloured jeans and hoodies

Irish guys don't really have their selection of Forever 21s, New Looks and Miss Selfridges like us girls do. If they want to be stylish they've gotta pay a hefty price! Only other option is more tshirts with the Jack & Jones logo on them.

And men, if you're listening, pleeeeease stop wearing them. You'd swear half the Irish population are Jack & Jones sales assistants.

Very good posts. A big problem with trying to find nice stuff cheap in Ireland is that there is a huge part of the market in men's clothes made up of guys who buy cheap stuff purely because it's cheap without giving a crap if looks good/fits well/is of decent quality. That means that there is no reason to try to make nice budget stuff because it won't make much of a difference to sales.

The amount of choice is also dire. I could probably have a good look through all the men's clothes shops in Cork in an hour and a half. Then take into account the amount of stuff that shops are selling that is identical to other shops and the actual options are minuscule. Might be different in Dublin, I can't say I don't live there.

I agree he is extremely good looking and could wear a bin liner and still look good, but I still think his casual wear is spot on.

Just don't see anything interesting or unique there at all, put your average joe in any of those outfits and you wouldn't bat an eyelid. He has unlimited cash it's weird not to see him in some killer pieces.

The fact that he has a great body helps. It is easier to look well when not trying to hide/enhance the bad/good bits.

That's the point, you don't need tons of cash just to dress well. No point of me posting his "killer pieces" as they wouldn't serve a point.

"Average Joe" as you put it doesn't need to drastically change their looks or spend tons of money to look good...but just step away from the bad get up that seems to have embraced most guys late twenties/ thirties.

i posted this in TGC might as well add it to here. I take pride in the way that im dressed. have a good few jackets which i mostly wear. not a huge fan of jumpers so normally have a smart light casual jacket. there is nothing more i cant stand than people not making an effort. im 19 and a student so not exactly loaded with money so usually save for the sales. and buy all online as there is next to zero choice here in Ireland.

yep prefer dressing smart. usually a pair of adidas originals or a pair of desert boots. pair of dark jeans. love my 501 pair of levis. polo shirt fred perry, original penguin and the likes(top button always closed!) and then a jacket usually something casual as well. only wear tracksuits and T-shirts around the house.
