    re that reg chaps,
I have read about it many times but question

It was a number given to the irish embassy in London by the Uk authorities.

fell into private hands , no problem, but at the time that it was given , no UK number could have an I or a Z in it.( while every Irish no. ,North and South had to have one of these letters.

So as well as giving a non existant no to the irish embassy , they "majic" ed up
    a not possible UK no.

By the way ,allowing for spacings it could be a Westmeath no.

    Regards, Rugbyman

Is there anything wrong with that?

    G 0, S 0, V 0, RG 0, HS 0, VS 0, LM 0 were "magicked" up and are all valid UK issues.

ETA: Forgot SY 0, there might be a few left I've forgotten.

That IRL 1 was certainly special considering UK/IRL history.
A limited number of "personal" plates, bearing a similar format to earlier civilian registrations, are issued to embassies and high commissions for use of their ambassador or high commissioner. For example, the United States embassy is allowed to use the registration USA 1 on one of its fleet of vehicles; Zimbabwe's high commissioner has ZIM 1 and South Korea's ambassador ROK 1 - 'Republic of Korea'.[47] The North Korean embassy, however, had to buy a vanity plate: PRK 1D

Never came across UK regs with 0, G 1,S 1,etc yes , but 0

    I dont understand your question.

There was a period in time when you could tax an English imported vehicle in Ireland. This is what IRL 1 was regardless of its unusual reg number.

    Thank you for your points,
I especially liked how Macplaxton added the k into Majicked, it looks better than majiced which I deleted in favour of inverted commas on Majic. another lesson learned.
I was not aware of numbers with only a zero, now I know that.

My point Kevin was that at that time there were no UK numbers with an I (aye) in it. Obviously the Govt.there made a special, as has been done with
ZIM 1.. oh, perhaps Capri, i should enter into Wiki and add that Zimbabwe is a little village near Oughterard.

I have a photo on my phone ,taken near PARIS
of a Uk reg .. T 75, worth a few bob I would imagine, I forget how to get it on here, what do you reckon it was on..........

    an Avensis.

That IRL 1 probably has a brown logbook a well. Friend of mine had an old T-bird with UK reg in brown Irish logbook so he was legally entitled to use the UK reg on Irish roads and it would have been on the Irish tax disc as well - never happen these days

I remember being stuck in a traffic jam in the UK years ago in a van with a Westmeath ALI reg number and next thing there was a guy knocking on the window frantically wanting to buy the plate!

I know there was a time that you could retain an Irish number when re-reging a car in the UK but he was too late for that otherwise we would have sold van and all on the spot!

If I was Revenue / Gardai I'd be pulling it :D

If it's legit NI then the plate'd be yellow, legit IRL then it'd be white with 05 D .... . It's 'suspect'

Using a UK or NI reg on an ROI plate attracts less attention in the south.
I used to have my ROI reg on a yellow plate travelling to the UK in the 70's & 80's as it attracted a lot less attention from the UK cops when anti Irish feelings were running high.
The hauliers usually did the same, as well as not having the old high vis side and rear markings on the trucks and trailers which stood out from a mile away.

Remember being pulled over my 'Italian size' front plate in London - "Irish plate" I said, "Very sorry Sir, carry on" said Inspector who'd pulled me . :D

Yes, IRL 1 was a special issue in the UK.

That reminds me, what ever happened to the controversial 88 BAC XXXX that was issued in Dublin, I think it was to a taxi.
The owners reasoning was that as Irish is the first language of Ireland he should be entitled to have Dublin in Irish on his numberplate and the authorities agreed (for a while at least).
I also think thats the reason the county name in irish was introduced in 1991 at the top of the plate.
    Did the plate survive?

That a new one on me?!
I recall reading that some 'supporters' of the Irish language wanted to have 'BAC' (Baile Atha Cliath, 'CM'...Cill Mhaintain etc etc etc), but I never heard of anybody actually (legally!) having such a plate issued to them?

Is it true or just an urban myth?
... or some guy who had the plate made up as some form of 'protest'??

You are correct re the county name at the top of the plate. This was the compromise the govt made to the Irish language lobby.

Well, I heard it on the radio back in the day,the guy was being interviewed and he was explaining his love of the Irish language and his justification for its issue.
It being an interesting story it stuck with me since, whether it was issued by a nieve member of staff I don't know, and whether he got to keep it I don't know either?

I used to regularly see an 88-BAC-nnnnn reg on a then-new Ford Escort back in 88. As far as I know, the owner just had the plate made up with BAC instead of D - in '87, there were some complaints/disappointment amongst Irish-lovers that the county initials were in english, and some people did it as a form of protest, but the Gardai were not sympathetic as far as I remember. That kind of thing died out when Europlates came in in '92, with the counties in Irish at the top.

There was a crowd called the Topless models company in Dublin that had at least two convertible beetles for hire in the 90s that were 78-BAC-XXXX. As far as I know, they just replaced the D in their reg numbers with BAC. Written in black script on a silver background, so not exactly compliant with all the regulations..

There were Euro plates from '91, I'm certain. Anyhow D could stand for Dubhlinn or whichever.;)
