i thought after he scored a couple of goals at the euros that there would be a few teams in for him. not to be though - hes just earning too much

average defender IMO. started off ok with us - scored a few goals but they papered over a lot of cracks. i remember reading a blog when he first joined that talked to an ajax fan - he said he was surprised arsenal went for him that he was decent but not top quality. said jan vertonghen was a much better defender.

id have mert and kos as first choice pairing but thats just me

Don't think it's just you at all.

cannot believe anyone would label Verm a flop, he's had a poor start to this season but lets not lose the run of ourselves

Wouldn't quite label him a flop yet, but he's been poor since second half of last season...quite a while now

    http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/football/teams/arsenal/9744221/Arsenals-second-largest-shareholder-Alisher-Usmanov-calls-for-the-return-of-Thierry-Henry-in-a-non-playing-role.html

Usmanov slowly putting himself back in the public eye as the good guy in all of this. Wouldn't trust him as far as i could throw him though. Although would he be much worse than Silent Stan is anybody's guess.
Hard to know who is actually looking out for the good for the club in a Football sense, as they all look to me as if they are just there for the money and nothing else.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,468 ✭✭✭DenMan

Usmanov has already put millions in to help clear some of the club's debt. Actions speak louder than words. I hope he buys the club and removes the wage cap we have. He's spoken disappointingly about the players who have left and said it was a mistake letting them go.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,631 ✭✭✭batistuta9

that money was refused was it not?

think he actually offered to clear the whole thing

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,468 ✭✭✭DenMan

I believe you are right batistuta9. Our board probably turned down his offer. It was genuine though. I've been following him on twitter and he speaks so highly of Arsenal FC. He wants the club to be one of the most successful clubs in Europe. Goodness knows he has the financial muscle to allow us to compete with the elite.

Don't think he has been allowed do anything but buy shares. He offered to pay off club debt but it was refused. Nice gesture though all the same.
That letter released during the summer was just him trying win the confidence of the fans and turn them on Stan imo. He put in out on public domain literally the day after RVP signed for Utd, when he knew that most of the fans would be fuming and could be easily persuaded. He's a clever businessman and it's hard to know if he would do right by the club.
Think the only thing that would work nowadays would be to have several owners of the club like there used to be.

Can't see why one billionaire is so much worse than another.

Also is Dein being proven right now? Years ago he went out looking for billionaires and found usmanov and kronke.

This was before man city but he clearly saw the writing on the wall and what arsenal needed to compete over the next few years.

    Bring him back I say.

Arsenal is one of the only clubs in England which has no significance to an area city etc,its just a name for a football Club.

Ok this annoys me, not this is the umpteenth time he said this or the bazillionth time a spuds player has said it but the holding midfielder bit. So obviously wenger knew we'd a deficency there and went to plug out, it fell through and again no f'in plan b, just plan plan d gamble on diaby. There's a history of it, 98-99 hamman back in his newc days, if petit or vieira were out we were screwed so he went for hamman, deal stopped over a few hundred K and the pool got him, we got noone, sure enough petit and vieira missed a good few matches and the league was close that year(fa cup don't mention), there was Baptiste debacle but that didn't turn out too bad in the end but we wasted a whole summer on him and eventually got noone, there was Xabi, we lost out on a great midfielder over 2m quid again no backup, they did bid for Reina 3 years ago because he recognised Al was a mess and yet again no backup buy. FFS have an interest in player a or b, so if a falls through you can go for b and stop gambling on players being fit.

Yes it doesn't look good. Vertonghen probably was plan B when AW decided not to go for M'Vila though.

Oh please. What else would he say?

I hope Henry has enough sense not to allow his reputation be the vehicle Ushmanov uses to try and take control of the club.

Stan is bad, but this guy would be worse.

Haven't been around here in a while and while great start to season the wheels appears to have come off.
Some players have been doing ok, some great and others are just confirming what some of us said about them last year.

I nearly choked the night I saw chamakh and squillaci on the pitch.
I thought the sofa in the kitchen had become a time travel device and I had time travelled to autumn 2010. :(

Anyway reason for post is that I picked up part of radio interview on I think Radio 1 last night discussing fact that Wenger has fallen out with Bould and that he and Brady haven't been bestest friends for the last couple of years.
Also claims that Bould was forced on Wenger and that he has been sidelining him.

    Any thoughts on this ?

BTW if Wenger is finally given, the now annually promised wad of cash to spend on transfers, could someone please for the love of God now allow him near France.

I am not allowed discuss …

The standard of possible signings on here is depressing, we shouldn't be looking at players like Tiote and Ba if we want to get back to the top.

I think Tiote would be a good signing for us. Ba I wouldnt want near us cause its almost certain that this dodgey knee of his ive heard so much about would make a come back the second he signed on the dotted line

Very interesting (if true) that Bouldy was forced upon Arsene, Who forced it?
Was Gazidas making a power play on Arsene to let him know he's the boss.

I think Kronke/Gazidas need to step up, lead the club, give it direction.
Let them deal with the finances and let Arsene do what he does best.

+1 on the whole France thing, the league is a shadow of its former shadow

    p.s. Welcome back

We need to stop looking down at players like this because they don't play for a top side, that's the problem,I would take tiote in a second,ba yes if it wasn't for his knee rumours.

Still heaps of players in France who could improve our squad - value to be had too - very much doubt he'll stop shopping there

I'd be willing to bet Diaby won't play again this season. He's in the '3 weeks away' purgatory that Wilshere, Vermaelen and Rosicky have occupied in the past.

And he isn't 'some player' either. He's a very streaky player who a lot of people have pinned misguided hopes on being the solution to the Arsenal midfield.

He should be cut loose tbh.

    From Arsenal.com

    on Abou Diaby's injury…
Slow progress. I cannot give you any fixed date because we are a bit in no man's land on that front. He is working. We are waiting for him to come back but he is not ready.

    on him playing over Christmas…
    Over Christmas? Certainly not.

I'm not having that - giving half a chance he would have been an excellent player for us. Injuries prevented that from happening - although part of me thinks that half a chance would never have come - he maybe just didn't have the body to be a professional footballer

That Dan Smith tackle ended any hopes he had of every making it into the world class or excellent category. He's a good player, but inconsistent. I swear that Liverpool match is giving everyone a rosy memory of him. I've seen numerous games where he's been piss or hidden.
