Would it be worth it to take piano lessons?

09-12-2012 10:03PM#1I've been playing by ear for the last 15 years. I know the basics of music theory- sight reading, rhythm etc but I'd love to be able to play fluently on sight
I've recently bought a decent digital piano so I'm thinking now that it might be worth taking a few lessons. However, a friend of mine was saying that playing by ear is a music teachers worst enemy and I've probably picked up some desperate habits over the years that will be nigh on impossible to break 
Am I really a lost cause or is there any hope? Can you really teach an old dog new tricks???

IMO your friend is talking a load of s***e with regards playing by ear. If it's the music teacher's worst enemy, that's not saying much for that particular music teacher. A good teacher will be able to build on the knowledge you already have. Being able to play by ear is a real asset with any instrument.
I think it would be a great idea to take some lessons from a teacher. Not only will he/she keep you on the straight and narrow, but a good teacher can also keep you motivated.
Finally, you are never too old to learn or improve on an instrument, so I say GO FOR IT !! and enjoy. :cool:0 -
