    Yeah, beautiful bike.

MAssive debate online about whether or not the frame is the same as the De Rosa R838, which is about a grand more expensive for the same spec.

    Spot the difference

Lads, was there any change to the bike to work scheme in the budget yesterday? Is there any threat to it or reduction to it? I didn't hear anything but I know the budget usually only focuses on the big issues and changes to the bike to work scheme may have come in under the radar!!

Cheers horse. Are they on the bike to work scheme?

AFAIK, that depends on your employer.

At the risk of asking a silly question.............

i'm a self employed sole trader. I was gonna buy a bike under this scheme. I pay tax at the higher rate, my employee at the lower rate. I also have a small company from which I dont take a wage.

Can I buy it for my employee and get the relief at the higher rate? Would she only get relief at the lower rate? Just looking for advice on how to structure this so I get the relief at the higher rate.

Your employee can use the scheme and get basic rate relief. You are self employed and therefore ineligible

Is your wife not female then?

I think it's because the bike isn't actually for his wifey...

Yep - what you are suggesting is illegal - your wife must intend using it mainly to commute. If it's mainly for your use she cannot use the scheme to buy it

Asking for advice on how to break the law is not permitted on Boards

    Suprisingly enough..........

The commas were designed to infer that the bike was for my use:rolleyes:

TBH I wish you hadn't either, but as it was you that was looking for a way to circumvent the law I don't think you can complain too much at some of the replies you got

However if you do wish to complain, report the posts and leave it for the mods to deal with - do not respond in thread

    Thanks

Why do you say that? You were openly suggesting breaking the law. I take exception to that and responded accordingly. If you don't get sarcasm then that's your issue, not mine. You can't reasonably expect other users to help you out in your attempts to evade tax.

MAYBE GET OUT YOUR DICTIONARY BEFORE YOU TAKE EXCEPTION NEXT TIME If you don't get sarcasm then that's your issue,NO IT'S YOURS, DIDN'T POST TO GET INVOLVED IN SARCASTIC BANTER not mine. You can't reasonably expect other users to help you out in your attempts to evade tax.

once again...... i posted a q re the bike scheme. if I want a bit of banter, I'll meet my mates rather than engage with keyboard warriors. Thats a stupid unnecessary response. You're miffed cos I didn't think your post was hilarious like the mod.
As regards the 'tax evasion', I suggest you pick out the dictionary. What I suggested is neither illegal or evasive. While it is not within the spirit of the law it doesn't break it! this must be the first case in history of someone wishing to reduce their tax liability.i'm attempting to buy a bike within the law just like others availing of this scheme. I'm sure ye all would suitably admonish all those who've not paid their household charge good luck to ye:rolleyes:

OK, just to be clear - what was being suggested was tax evasion - there is no "de-minimis" amount, so although you may think it's not an issue it is illegal. No more discussion on this point - if anyone has an issue with my interpretation of the tax law, PM me - do not respond in thread or I'll be dishing out cards

    Thanks

If I get employer to buy a bike from a UK online store, can it still be part of the cycle to work scheme?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 14,318 ✭✭✭✭Raam

    Yes.

Hi there I was just wondering if there is a way of getting a bike from the bike to work scheme if your employer doesn't agree to it? Can you just claim the tax back or something instead on the full price of the bike?

My employer has said no but I am really keen to start cycling to work?

Apologies if you have already covered this in the thread but I couldn't find the answer.

    Cheers

Sorry, but no - the employer initially buys the bike - if they don't agree to do this (and indeed administer the salary sacrifice arrangements) you cannot take advantage of the scheme
