Dubliner's slang for girlfriend/wife

    Why do Dubs call their significant other their "Mot" not sure about spelling there... Usually preceded by the word "me"

    I hate when anyone uses slang terms like "mot," "bird," "fella," "OH" etc. instead of "boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife."

    It sounds like they're embarrassed to use the proper word.

    What really irks is when people spell "mot" "moth," with a silent "h." Even if I know the writer's intention, I can't help but read it in my head like they're referring to their pet butterfly-like creature.

    Is something to do with Ministry of Transport test (MOT)? Maybe Anto and Deco are subconsciously refering to Jacintaaaa and Janeh as their MOT's because they think of them as nothing more than a ride, and/or a wagon?
