If that would be the case then Ativ S id definetly going to be my next WP8.

Memory is foggy but did the 800 launch in december 2011 or Jan 2012?

Lumia 800 launched February 1st, I remember getting my review unit around the 20th of January.

A couple of added impressions after a week of use:

This thing is Solid. With my old iphones one of the first things I do was buy a case to protect it.

But with the 920 I realize I haven't even thought about a case, I throw the thing in my gym bag too, and in jacket pockets etc. I look after it but I don't cosset it and it just feels so solid state that a case just isn't needed. I might get some kind of pouch case for it just to shield against moisture but it doesnt need one of those close fitting every day covers.

Also its a small detail but the touch screen sensitivity is really nice. I get up at 5:30am and its usually Cold when I leave for work so being able to use the phone with gloves on is great. Its one of those little conveniences that aren't a selling point but really nice nonetheless.

I havent bought a charging plate yet because AT&T promised to send me one which I havent received yet but thats another little convenience that makes life easier.

It's not fair their leaving out so late here. HTC 8X is already available on two networks, and Ativ S is meant to be available by the end of this month.

Didn't read all of the comments but any of the ones I seen saying it was locked were all based on what salespeople/network said. I didn't see any from people who actually bought one and tried it out. It is a big risk though so not for everyone. Can you even buy unlock codes for this yet?

Got my 920 the other day from Clove. Am absolutely blown away by it. I've never seen a phone so responsive or intuitive before.

I won't lie, the app ecosystem doesn't match IOS yet, that's fair to say, but the alternatives are very good in their own right.

I was actually out tonight with my friend who had his iPhone 5 in tow. The thing felt like a child's toy in comparison. Needless to say, he'll be getting on the 920 bandwagon too soon enough.

And yes it's pricey but I needed it unlocked as I'm moving to Asia next week and I was looking to replace my recently sold DSLR. I much prefer travelling with a high quality point n shoot over a DSLR as you can capture more moments. Having a high quality phone camera then is even better again. And my God, the quality of the video on the thing is nothing short of amazing.

Other apps I'm loving are Baconit for reddit, Nokia drive (just.. wow) and the SkyDrive integration is pretty neat too.

In short, I love this phone and have no want for anything else on the market.

I remember the iphone app store when there wasnt much there too and it doesnt take too long for the choice to grow. I kind of enjoy watching it grow too. And I havent lost anything I cant live without or replace.

The speed of the 920 is really impressive, the speed of the device itself (barely any pause in loading programmes), and the speed of 4g LTE (we're in Seattle where AT&T just updated its system) is just amazing.

Using wifi or finding hotspots just isnt an issue anymore because there's no detectable speed difference that i can appreciate.

And I love love love Win Phone 8...

    :o

damn 920 really looks cool, but no way ill be able to bite that sucker in... :(

so my option would be HTC 8X, though its a shame there is feck all reviews of 8S out there. Its only 309eu on expansys and it would be still a HUGE upgrade from my ****y 3GS.

Please stop.:( I'm trying to think of reasons NOT to get one.:p:D

Very tempted but not at the current money.
What would I be missing or would I be very disappointed if I went for the 820?

Think this 820 review can sum it up for you.

Yeah. I read most of the reviews and comparisons.

Screen size/quality and better camera in the 920 seem to be the biggest differences. The 820 seems to have most of the other goodies the 920 has.

I know they're different devices but is there some glaring omission I'm missing?

No not really. Key differences are:
    • construction
    • screen resolution
    • camera technology
    • price
    Everything else is the same

Well I like that 820 is damn solid phone and 480x800 resolution is still very good. ( I am still using 3GS, which is 320x480... )

Problem is not a device, problem is pricing. 820 is 560eu in expansys. Holy fecking bejaysus. For that you can get a htc 8x, note 2, S3 ( even cheaper for 499eu )
Htc 8s looks like a lot better deal if you can't spend that kind of money and want mid range. It's almost same as Nokia, but 309eu.

Btw lads, how long would it take to get micro SIM card if I am prepay? Does that take a few days?

  • Moderators, Technology & Internet Moderators Posts: 7,594 Mod ✭✭✭✭pleasant Co.

Expansys wouldnt be ideal if you're looking for value for money ;)

As for micro sim, you should be able to pick one up in store from your provider handily enough

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,049 ✭✭✭kaizersoze

€515 delivered from Amazon so Expansys aren't that bad. Both are way too dear though.
I can get it exVAT so that's a saving.

Then the wireless charging shell is an extra, probably ~€60.

Sorry if I'm derailing the thread. Just looking for a comparison to the 920.

I would seriously considering waiting. Might not happen here, but from looking at US and UK carriers they seem to either add a wireless charging dock, for 820 wireless charging cover comes as a standard or most recent you get a copy of windows 8.

Expansys offers none and has a huge price

Hi! Are there any irish providers supplying this yet? I've been looking around (o2, Meteor, Vodafone) and all i can find is the 800?? I dont really want to fork out the 600 notes outright. If not, anyone know why?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 9,688 Mod ✭✭✭✭stevenmu

No Irish providers yet, Nokia have said there will be announcements next month.

My best guess is that they were waiting for the 4G/LTE auction to complete and for the providers to come up with their plans. I suspect that they will launch the 920 along with 4G/LTE coverage.

Speaking to a guy in a vodafone shop, who said it'll be no earlier than February.Don't know how reliable that is, but at least it gives me more time to save my(many, many, many) pennies.
For whats its worth, he said he had hands on the phone and it brilliant, but will be ridiculously expensive:(

Start of February would sound about right.
