An small Jökulhlaup, that is over due.

Possible EQ'S (non ice quakes) in the Loki-Fogrufjoll region, rear event for myself.

Minor stuff, before the summer season closes.

Jon Frimann has spotted harmonic tremors pulsing over the past few fays on the Skrokkalda station. It's happening again at the moment.

    UgEcJ.gif

According to Jon this is from either the Hamarinn, Grimsfjall or Bardarbunga volcanoes.

Worth keeping an eye on. :)

Edit : Jon has a blog post about this now. So far nothing new has happened.
It is impossible to know what this means exactly. But so far there are no signs of eruption in the area. This activity is less then activity in July 2011 that was created by an minor eruption in Hamarinn volcano. Stronger harmonic tremor pluses appear on SIL station at longer distance. But for now (when active) most of the activity only appears on SIL stations closest to the Vatnajökull glacier. I am going to continue to monitor the current situation. I will update or make a new blog post about what is going on if anything happens.

The strongest Quake swarm in some years is taking place now in North Iceland. Some minor damage is been reported, gladly no one is hurt.

    http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/

However, over the last few weeks, the hotspot under Iceland is showing two signs that it is raising up. If this is taking place, then it adds more pressure and an new fissure episodes can to come about. within the next 10-20 years peak activity for Iceland is on the way and this is another pointer of this.

I particularly like Islander explanation. Maybe we should see this on the bigger picture.

We know that a pulse of the hotspot is just happening at this period (years). The IMO has been speaking on this for several times. Grimsvotn had a large eruption.

In 2000 and 2008, the south had major earthquakes. Now, it seems to be more activity to the north. It might be that the pulse from the hotspot pushed the rifting at the mainland of Iceland, and that causes large stress to the north and southwest of the hotspot center. However, except for Grimsvotn, Eyjafjallajokull and increase activity at Katla, we have not seen yet anything large over the center of Iceland.

Perhaps, the dead zone might rift eventually, resulting in a fissure eruption.
Or Hekla, if it erupts, it will have a larger eruption.
Perhaps Vatnsfjoll or anything else weird (near Tindfjoll or Tungafellsjokull) might erupt.
    Or Hamarinn.

We simply do not know, but let’s see how the stress at the different spots plays out during the next few days, over the rest of Iceland."

No volcano is showing signs of eruption from this and no harmonic pulse either, just long term it is great to see Iceland is one big volcano.

Wow that is a major swarm alright.

Unless you live there, but when I was there, the locals didn't really seem to mind that the place could just erupt some day, they are crazy folk indeed.

And it continues. Very long swarm this.

Possible 6.8 due to increase stress at some point, could trigger the south of Iceland.

Thanks Bruce for todays excellent blog-post. Well written, well argued and informative.
(besides supplement “writing revue” from “truckster” GeoLoco, and others commenters comments are good addition too, “to have on file” so to speak. Thanks all.)
Given the circumstances a “Like” whould have been in order, but in consideration for the victims (all Italian´s and Italy as a whole in this case), I will not pass one this time.
BTW, IMO has stated there is risk of “up to 6,8R off North-Iceland” is possible. I was visiting in the Sigló region this summer, and building standard seem to me be good to excellent. Most houses are of good steel re-einforced concrete, and older ones are mostly wodden ones, that usually stand well up to Icelandic earthquakes, but their foundations (likely mostly older concrete, with various quantity of steel in them). Those can be damaged, but often are repairable. That is simlar to what happened as most damage too many houses in the SISZ in three 6+ quakes in years 2000 and 2008.

There could be damage, f.e. at Siglufjörður Town or harbour, or surrounding town or settlements, like Ólafsfjörður or Dalvík Towns, but again I hope this large quake will not hit in one “thump”, but be dispersed in many smaller ones (stress is there and can only release in quakes, question is how many or how dense they be). There was interviews with one witness on TV tonight about earlier quakes in the region (1970s), and damage to houses did happen then, and people was very scared, assembling in one place at a football-field and staying into the night.

One Icelandic Volcano Expert is speculating (on his blog http://vulkan.blog.is/blog/vulkan/ ) there might? be ongoing volcanic intrusion into sediments under Eyjafjarðaráll-region. I think he has good merit for speculating such (see graphs in his icelandic-text blog). Current swarm is almost too steady for anything else but ongoing intrusion (at depth) creating Christmas-tree like sills due lower density of the sediment layers.

Through Google Translate. An uncertainly level has been declared due to the risk of a large earthquake.
After consulting with scientists, police administrators Sauðárkrókur, Akureyri and Husavik National Commissioner has decided to declare a confidence level of civil seismic wave off the north.

Civil National Police Commissioner, the district civil defense, emergency and scientists have all been working hard work then cycle began on Saturday. Tasks that describe the work of these bodies on the uncertainty level. It was therefore considered appropriate to the level of uncertainty would be declared in accordance with the work and the response of these entities. Level of uncertainty with the suspicion that something is going on by natural or man-made that at a later stage could lead to health and human safety, environmental or building is threatened.

Vísindamannaráð Civil met today and the meeting was concluded that this area is known to have large earthquakes, about 2 to 3 per century. It is also known that large earthquakes accompanied the earthquake cycle toxicity although it is not certain. Cycle that is now underway is the strongest ever recorded in the 20 year period. It should also be borne in mind that a large earthquake on the Y-Traders Jarman gangs could trigger other large earthquakes on either the same faults or Grímsey belt which lies to the northwest from the primary.

For those citizens who live at or near known earthquake is a good opportunity to reflect on what measures can be done to minimize damage and reduce the risk of accidents due to earthquakes.

Well boardsies... you might very well have one of your own reporting live from the site of the action... well kinda... I am going to Iceland next Thursday... that is Weather permitting (bombing charts, hurricanes, snow blizzards), earthquake permitting.... never had so much extreme weather and natural phenomenons threaten to show up for a holiday!!

Had a wonderful trip. Didn't notice any effects from any earthquakes!! Got to see the Big E ( can't spell it, or pronounce it despite lessons!) lol and lots of other volcano's.
It's amazing countryside, craters, geysers, new islands, black beaches etc....Wonderful... :)

It is an amazing country to see the raw power of nature at work in front of your eyes. When I went in 2010 just after the Eyjafjallajökull eruption stopped you could have a volcano barbeque there. :D

I love the forests they have there as well you would never get lost in them ;)

Seismic activity in Iceland for the last 48 hours is as quite as I've seen in a long time

EQ, yes. Maybe something else happening longer term.

Over the last few weeks, the mantle under Iceland looks to be on the move again.

EQ in Hekla a while ago.

    http://hraun.vedur.is/ja/hekla/borholu_thensla.html

12% dip in the strain today. 12% of the year 2000 Hekla Eruption.

    http://en.vedur.is/earthquakes-and-volcanism/earthquakes/myrdalsjokull/

The next few hours or days could get very??

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

Yeah, keeping an eye on Hekla at the moment.

Hard to know what to think of the earthquakes. They are at the depth you'd expect to see regular tectonic quakes in that area, but its unusual to see several within a short time and clustered in the same spot. They do not fit with the established pattern of volcanic quakes which have only ever been observed happening in swarms closer to the surface, minutes/hours before the eruption.

If she does erupt some time soon I'd expect a fairly "normal" VEI 3 eruption since it's only been 13 years since the last eruption. Hekla's big eruptions usually only happen after much longer periods of inactivity.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

An uncertainty phase (like a low level alert) has been issued now for Hekla because of the unusual earthquakes that have been going on around there recently.
Uncertainty phase because of seismic activity in mount Hekla.

The National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police (NCIP) and the Police commissioner at Hvolfsvöllur declare an uncertainty phase (lowest level of warning), because of seismic activity in mount Hekla.

The Icelandic Met Office has informed the Civil Protection and Emergency Management of NCIP about unusual seismic activity in mount Hekla. The Icelandic Met Office has raised the ICAO aviation color code to yellow concerning air traffic, which means that mount Hekla is showing an unusual activity.

Uncertaintyphase means that supervision has been raised on that course of events that may threaten public health and safety, or that environment or inhabited area may be threatened. To declare an uncertainty face is a part of work process in the setup of public safety to secure a formal communication between response teams and to secure dissemination of information.

In light of all of this the National Commissioner of the Icelandic Police and the Police commissioner at Hvolfsvöllur would warn people from hiking on mount Hekla while this uncertainty phase is in force

    http://almannavarnir.is/displayer.asp?cat_id=8&module_id=220&element_id=3007
The Police in Hvolsvöllur and the Civil Defense department have expressed concern over increased seismic activity around Hekla volcano in the past few days. Seven tremors have been measured in the last two weeks, a frequency which has never been matched since Hekla’s previous eruption.

According to geologists at the Icelandic Meteorological Office, the seven earthquakes were measured some 5 km from the top of the volcano and at a depth of 11 to 12 km. However, no magma movement has been measured. The volcano is being closely monitored at the moment by geologists who decided to alert authorities as Hekla eruption usually happen with very little warning, and the mountain itself is a popular hike among locals and tourists alike

Keeping an even closer eye....some strange looking tremors showing up right now. No earthquakes yet though. Might be just weather.

Edit : Looks like that was just noise/interference.

The Gas monitoring station on top will not be active tlll April. double danger pay if you turn the manual switch now. :) photos from the account below.

    https://twitter.com/BGSvolcanology

    https://twitter.com/EIlyinskaya.

The STO meter was installed 3 years I understand and not allot of info on why it's like this now. could be normal??

http://www.mbendi.com/a_sndmsg/place_view.asp?pid=3410499. Off chance it could be a local issue. I do not see that adding up with others details.

Hekla has looked like it will go before and nothing happened.

However the GPS is saying a possible rise above the last eruption and is continuing. the links below explain the background

    http://earthice.hi.is/hekla_seismicity

    http://earthice.hi.is/deformation_studies_hekla_volcano

    http://strokkur.raunvis.hi.is/gps/#HE

My bet is that Hekla is anywhere from a few weeks away to a few days away yet if at all.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,134 ✭✭✭✭maquiladora

STO was there for the 2000 eruption, it isn't that recent.

BUR strain took a dive before that eruption. There was very little warning, just minutes.

    strain_rate_1500.png

According to Icelandic media nothing new has been noticed today and the alert level will be re-evaluated in the morning.

Problem is with Hekla from what I read on the various volcano blogs it is probably one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world in terms in how quick it erupts. If you were on top of Hekla and felt a serious tremor it is likely you wont survive, it can be so quick to erupt. You are talking in terms of minutes compared to other volcanoes which tend to give a few more obvious signals preluding to a eruption. I would be very surprised if it doesnt erupt this year though theres been a lot of minor quakes there the past year or so and it has been like this for a while now and the inflation of the volcano is more than pre-eruption levels of 2000. Its one to keep a eye on

A blogpost discussing Hekla a year old though but still very informative.

The Hekla webcam might be worth keeping a eye on for the coming weeks
