Nature? Your ancestors' eating and exercise habits determine your height. If a man breaks his leg and permanently bends it out of shape, his genes may pass down to his son and his son will inherit a gammy leg. In essence, you control your children's/grandchildren's body shape before they are even born.

Nature would imply it naturally bones without anybodies' control - bullsh!t! It's still man-controlled/man-made. If you want your children to grow taller than whomever they inherited their genes from, then feed them foods and drinks rich in calcium and protein while they're in their growing years (ages: 0 - 21 for boys and 0 -18 for girls) and encourage your children to engage in sports that involve a lot of stretching of the bones and muscles.

    this sounds like utter quackery

ever watch Red Dwarf? I'm reminded of the part where Rimmer tells a story about how his father was just below regulation height to get into the space core, so he insisted on stretching rimmer and his brothers on a rack as kids.

I spent about €3000 on Laser Eye surgery a few years ago. Technically, I didn't need it as I could just continue to wear glasses. But it improved my quality of life, was practically risk free & affordable (at the time). I don't see much difference between that and surgery to increase height.

I'm getting laser eye surgery myself. I have to do some research on that in the near future. I don't wear glasses and I don't plan to either because I'd feel ugly and people always look weird without them.

more intimidating to other men when in fights
One kick to the wrong part of his leg, and your mate goes down screaming...

It can take years to get those kind of inches from those surgeries. And during that time you have pins in your legs that are adjusted every few weeks.

Wrong. Your bone grows back at a rate of 1mm per day on average. 26 days = 1 inch. Your muscle and tissue take twice as long to grow, so it's about 50 days per inch.

So when mixed martial artists break their leg, that's it, they're finished, their career is over? Don't be ridiculous, when it's fully grown, it will be as strong as any other leg. How do think broken legs heal in the first place?

Basically you just said that when footballers break their leg, they will always suffer from weak legs for the rest of their lives. They don't.

    hahaha!!

Ive had orthopediac surgery, twice, and I can tell you straight up, bone pain is the worst pain you will ever feel and it lasts for YEARS!!! And still flares up in cold weather. Skin and muscle heal in no time and are nothing by comparison.

Well, I read the dairy of people that had it done and they said the bone part was the least painful. Take your argument up with them by looking for the Make Me Taller forum on Google.

I wouldnt look at a forum like that because it would be the same as looking at a pro ana website, just lots of deluded people with body dysmorphia encouraging each other to damage their bodies. Very sad.

its truly mind-boggling, anyone electing for this needs to be heavily medicated.

In fact we could use advertisements for this procedure to entrap people who are in dire need of psychiatric treatment, when you arrive for your procedure you are dragged off by men in white coats.

get me 50 mils of thorazine, stat!

I suggest we do the same thing for anyone who buys a heavy metal album in a music store. Anyone who listens to that aggressive crap obviously has some serious mental issues. It's just emo music with distortion, power chords and some angry guy shouting about how his father never gave him any attention as a child.

Tis all connected - kinetic chain! You stub your toe, you walk funny for a bit and posture ain't gonna be right either.

Good point, actually. When you see someone doing the "walk of shame" with their big, hungover head on them, their shoulders and head are drooped forward because of the pain in their head and I doubt cancer patients have a great posture because they don't have the energy to maintain one.

    How short is too short?

I'm 5'7.5-5'8, so shortish but never thought it was a total disaster. I'm still taller than most women. :P

Height is also one of the most universally agreed upon measures of physical attractiveness.

In support of your statement, this pubmed article states that taller men have more reproductive success, based upon the greater attractiveness of larger males to females.

So maybe the hobbit fella has a point.

Yes because liking lyrically challenging, complex music that requires a decent amount of skill to play and the use of more than two brain cells at once to listen to (as opposed to "baby, baby, yeah") is completely and utterly the same as someone who wants unnecessary, risky surgery with a doubtful outcome, for seriously dubious reasons. Great logic there OP.

As for your previous comments, yes it is commonly the case that women prefer taller men, your "friend" should obviously just try looking for women that are shorter than him, rather than having his legs smashed to bits, because trust me, as a woman I'd find the scarring, obvious narcissism and lack of self-preservation involved with such a procedure to be a hell of a bigger turn off than him being slightly shorter than average. I'm also saying this as a 6 ft tall woman - I'd obviously find it difficult to find many partners taller than myself, never made me want to have my legs cut off at the knee though just so I could be shorter. Instead, I learned to live with it, and made the best of it, enjoying the benefits of e.g. being able to kick the arse out of any would-be rapist myself rather than expecting some guy to have to do it for me.
Anyway, we're all the same height lying down, kwim? ;)

This procedure will make his penis look smaller.....so whats he going to do then?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,091 ✭✭✭dearg lady

so, does his thigh or his shin get longer? Even his legs could look really weird and if the thigh and shin aren't lengthened equally surely walking becomes really strange

According to this website it's the shin

I don't really get it, there's 2 bones in the lower leg, do ya have to break both?

You're still not the same length, (i.e. a taller person will be longer in the bed) but seen as the number of inches between the person's nose and the mattress, there's not a huge difference, no matter how tall the er.. participants are when standing up :D

    According to here, yes.

    and this:
At no time should you ever consider having both lower and upper legs lengthened at the same time. While some international facilities perform this variation, recovery is very difficult and physical therapy nearly impossible because of the pain. We spoke to one person who opted for this. A year after the operation he was still bedridden.

Hard to believe people would destroy themselves voluntarily like this.

Did you even read the article?

    No! Thankfully somebody did!

Apologies, I've read it now, and it's a damned interesting article.

Eh, fair dues to you for pointing that out, Don Andolini. You are indisputably correct, that average-height men have more offspring.

Taller man are shown to be more attractive to women though.
Given our findings, it is puzzling that tall men are more attractive. Women might be more attracted to taller men because of the direct benefits it would confer to them, as height is universally positively associated with social status (Schumacher 1982; Silventoinen et al. 1999; Cavelaars et al. 2000; Judge and Cable 2004). Also in our study there was a positive association between height and income, but this did not translate into more reproductive success for taller men.

    Also:
...male body size (i.e. height) plays a role in both human mate choice and intra-sexual competition. Women prefer taller rather than shorter men in online dating advertisements (Salska et al. 2008)...taller men receive more responses to online dating advertisements (Pawlowski and Koziel 2002), are more likely to obtain a date (Sheppard and Stratham 1989), are more desirable in a speed-dating setting (Kurzban and Weeden 2005), have more attractive female partners (Feingold 1982) and are more likely to be married (Pawlowski et al. 2000). Although male height is related to mate choice in Western societies, recent studies indicate that preferences for taller men are not cross-culturally universal (Sear and Marlowe 2009).

Yes - and that's the important bit. I'd much rather be attractive to many women than have a lot of babies with one ugly chick.

    Also
    http://skeptics.stackexchange.com/questions/8540/do-taller-people-earn-more-money
According to a meta-analysis of four studies (>8k total subjects) by Judge and Cable (2004):

height is positively related to income after controlling for sex, age, and weight.

Tall people are more attractive and earn more money.

You should try to convince your "friend" that he's completely insane to even contemplate such a severe procedure.

I'm short enough myself but there's no way I could do anything like that, jesus christ. Mental.

I'd be a million times more embarrassed admitting to someone that I got that done, or that I even thought about getting it done, than I'd ever be of being a couple of inches shorter.

Proven? By who? Where is this proof?

Women like to be respected. Ive never met a woman who wants to be controlled.

This is personally proven and generally accepted by everyone by socializing with the opposite sex. You should try it sometime. It's great.
How often does the average guy have to ward off a rapist or an attacker? We're not living in a Steven Seagal movie.

When you stop watching Steven Seagal movies and leave your parent's basement, you will realise there are rapists and attacker out there that prey on women. It happens a lot.

How many fights do you, I mean does he, plan to be in? I mean seriously? If any doctor operated on someone with this as a reason the doctor should be locked up.

Not me, I already stated my height in my first post and am content in my height. You should invest in glasses; all that time you spend in your parent's basement watching Steven Seagal movies has ruined your eyesight. I train in mixed martial arts so I get into organized fights every month. He avoids getting into fights because he's a pussy.
Oh, and he wont be fighting anyone for a long long time, maybe never again - with his bad balance and weakened legs.

I never said he is planning on getting into fights, don't be so presumptuous. His balance will be perfectly fine, he's not the first one to try this and many others can run around after they've recovered.

Visit a forum called "Make Me Taller". Find it on Google, there are videos on there of past patients running around after they've recovered.

Breast implants are a totally different ballgame to leg lengthening. Are you aware that not many cosmetic surgeries require the patient to engage in months and maybe years of physiotherapy afterwards?

Are you aware that if breast implants are heavy enough, the patients can suffer from a spine curvature which can ultimately lead to contacting a chiropractor and months, or possibly years, of exercise routines to straighten it up?

Wouldn't say it's a totally different ball game but like I said in my original post, "extreme cosmetic surgeries."

Speaking as someone of the opposite sex, fcuk off you controlling git.. :D;)
It's definitely not a turn on for all women! I'd rather make average sized babies with a fella like GhostInTheRuins, whose mental health and self-esteem seem to be fully intact, than a controlling narcissist who thinks that social status will be magically achieved by having his legs broken.

    That's probably be true.

But if you'd met neither and saw them both at a pub, statistically, most women, would prefer the taller guy. And in the context of a night-out at a club or pub, it'd probably take a while before you realized the guy you found more attractive was a controlling narcissist.

well assuming I'm at least allowed to have a five minute conversation with each at some point, it'd be a no-brainer who would be coming home with me ;)
