Another fuzz pedal question....

    Hi all,

Owner of a big muff and a zoom ultra fuzz among other pedals. The Big Muff is great at what it does, but I only use it sparingly, as sometimes it seems too full on. My zoom ultra fuzz is on its last legs so won't be gigged any more.

I was looking at adverts and there are quite a few different fuzz pedals for sale. I'm looking for something sound wise at what Gary Clark Jr would use live. It doesn't sound very full on, but has that distinctive fuzz sound as well.
    He uses a fulltone octafuzz.

I already have a micro pog in my set up. One off my head on adverts that I could go for was the Mad Dog fuzz? But there's loads on there....

Sounds like he just uses the Octafuzz for the fuzzier leads, I'd say you're after a nice fuzz face or something like an Astrotone clone like he used/uses.

Do you have the reissue Big Muff? I find them really harsh, something like the older Ram's head is a much nicer fuzz pedal imo.

yeah, an American big muff. It's fine for single melody notes and strings, but it's too full on for chords, even when the distortion is rolled way back.

Yeah that's the common complaint alright, a few component changes does an amazing amount of difference to the usability of the pedal.

hmm, wonder if I could get someone to mod it instead of getting another fuzz pedal?

I reckon it'd be worth it.

As far as fuzzes go, the Black Arts Toneworks Pharoah is hard to beat. Why limit yourself to adverts.ie?

    Zvex fuzz factory

OP said he wanted a pedal that sounded like Gary Clark Jr's, which wasn't 'very full on'...

I had a quick listen to some of Gary Clark's stuff,it sounds like he uses the normal setting on the Octafuzz. From the song i listened to it looks like the fuzz is on all of the time but the volume on the guitar is backed off except for the solos when it's dimed and the effect becomes more saturated.

There's an Octafuzz on Adverts but it's pricey. An alternative would be one of those Fultone 70' pedals that are on there. Both are fine pedals.
