How to make Go Go gadget telescopic arm for costume

Going to a gig in a couple of weeks for Halloween and dressing as Inspector Gadget.

Need extendo-arm to shake hand of singer on stage.

Limited funds for it, will to spend max twenty quid.

Was thinking of using an automatic fishing reel, a spring, and PVC pipes.

It needs to extend to about 1m to 1.5m and compress to about 0.3m

Any ideas?

There must be some sort of grabber available in a toyshop for that? Something like this?

Edit: Maybe not as big an extension as you'd like, sorry...

You could also put inside some 4" aluminium or plastic ducting and it would look the part.

Cool. I think the ducting would look cool. I'd like to get a trellis grabber but i think it would need to be a little bigger

Buy one of those kid's, star wars light sabres, the kind were you push the button and it extends, then stick it inside a flexi tube like what you get on a vacuum cleaner (you can get similar in a plumbing shop), stick a glove on the end and there ye go, one extending arm!
