Doomsday Preppers, are they nuts or wise?

Just caught a glimpse of this the other night on Discovery Channel, these guys, for what are different reasons, believe that society is basically gonna collapse, law & order will break down, the ATM's will not dispense cash, the police and those who work for the government will not be paid, etc and basically they are preparing/prepping, for a situation they believe to be imminent over the next few years, where it'll be every man & woman for themselves...

It's not that hard to see why they (or us) should be worried, for example, if Greece defaulted, who's to say capital controls wouldn't be introduced on our banking system, in order to "firewall" the problem, prevent further contagion, movement of money out of the Eurozone, etc.

So do we have any preppers on boards.ie???

EDIT, Yeah I know, "yore ma's a prepper", now that we have that out of the way...

I like the idea of survivalism, and lurk on the forum here sometimes. I like to think I've got the (admittedly; book) smarts to not die of starvation if I survived the fall of civilisation.

If you look at how this EU thing though has been unfolding for the last few years, it's certainly not outside the bounds of possibility that we'd wake up in the morning and some big mad crazy even like a sovereign default would have taken place over night and the ATM's and the banks would be all shut in the morning, under government instruction.

Prepping might not look so fúcking crazy then, would it?!?

Seen the episode with a couple who had a shed full of food etc,enough for months.
What happens if a bomb lands on the shed.

I should be very surprised if that were to happen. Honestly, I think there's more chance of an Irish politician saying "Ah no, lads. You're paying me too much money" than there is of anything worthy of 'prepping' happening in the forseeable future.

That's not to say I don't occasionally think of fecking off to live in the woods and survive on mushrooms and dried worms, though. But that's more the fact that people piss me off.

I think its worth nothing that most of these "Preppers" are from southern US states and seem to have questionable levels of intelligence.

Not to mention the couple of them that i saw were all overweight/obese. I'd love to know what good loads of food is going to do when your health is already in doubt.

Theres a difference between survivalism and stupidity.

Ya dont see Bear Grylls filling his shed up with jars of food!!

Then they eat whats stored in the underground Nuclear bunker of course

no harm in being prepared. if I had the money Id like to store a load of stuff.
But more from a fantasy point of view than survival. Id love to roll up every weekend on my homestead and count jars of preserved meat

It's only a few months ago we were all saying give us back the Euro. I know a friend of mine who has a business and he went up the north and opened up a UK bank account for his money in case the shít hit the fan, sure isn't that a form of prepping!?!?!?!

I've seen a few documentaries about those preppers and their ultra-regimented lives and the privations they impose on themselves make me wonder what the hell for?:rolleyes:

The apocalypse they expect hasn't even happened and presumably life will be even harder after it.:eek:

In other words, they are so obsessed with survival that they fail to recognise they haven't got what they seriously need to get.

Nuts, absolutely nuts

I do find that show quite entertaining all the same. Only in America and all that.

The husband was on a survival course in work and last week he was dumped in the ar$ehole of Connemara with only the clothes on his back and a small survial tin (about the size of a lunch box that would only hold 1 sandwich). He didn't eat for a week. Just realistically if some disaster did occur, all the home jarred peaches in the world won't save you.

For some of them it just seems like a hobby more than anything but yeah, the majority appear to be batshit crazy. The fact that they force their kids to live under such strict and illogical rules should be classed as an abuse too.

I think some of the ideas behind it are sound and some of what they do is ingenious. However the people in the programme are bat shit crazy

I must admit that I wouldn't mind having a little bunker with a good supply of non perishable foodstuffs and an assault rifle with loads of ammo.

was considering doing something there when the euro looked like it was going to collapse I had read a book on life in argentina after their currency collapsed and it freaked me out.

I wanted to have a 1-2 weeks supply of food in the house so that I would be able to eat once the currency change over happened. I assumed that there might be chaos for a few days and then things would eventually settle down
as eventually everyone would have to go back to work. if it had happened Ireland would have become a low cost manufacturing destination overnight so it would not have been all bad.

I also meant to open a german bank acc too but never got round to doing that either.

I wouldve thought senile Soviet leaders (or american for that matter) with a very efficient nuclear arsenal at the touch of a button had us far closer to doomsday than an intelligent but politically cornered middle aged German woman with a cheque book.

In a word these preppers are fruitcakes. The world always muddles through its crises and sometimes even learns the odd lesson without civilisation falling apart!

The show I saw had a family with something like 70 assault weapons in their bunker along with all their non perishables. All your man did all day was target practice on a swamp. I loved the bit where the survival expert appraised it and said maybe you should replace some of the guns with water, you havent got nearly enough!

I dont know why they even make these documentaries any more, by now everyone knows that there exists in the more sleepy parts of the USA a significant minority who are devolving and regressing in terms of education and enlightenment and who would follow Ant and Dec if they had a bible in their hand. Shortly they will declare the (young) earth to be flat and to exist only between the Alabama gulf coast and the Arkansas river. In other words batsh!t crazy

I think I'd rather face the music and whatever apocalyptic scenario is happening at the time than spend the rest of my life in a hole.

Bunkers are big business in the US atm. Companies are claiming to be building huge underground compounds and are actively selling spaces to those gullible enough to buy them before they're even completed.

Not all bad??? Just 96% bad! I think Ill take my chances with our high value manufacturing and massive trade surplus thanks! The rest will come right after quite a bit less heartache than a national bankruptcy!!
