It's debatable whether they were actually a top 4 team going into these years. In 05/07 Kerry, Dublin, Tyrone were all certainly a step above Mayo and you could say the same for an improving Cork side at the time. Mayo were always capable of losing to lesser teams at this period too.

However after reaching a semi followed by an AI final it is safe to say they are surely a top 4 team now. They made a league final too for good measure. I just can't see this Mayo team making the mistake of Mayo teams before them and losing stupid games. I really think this Mayo team is a step above that

And if you lose to Galway in the opening game you're no longer top 4? Alot can change in a year not so long ago Donegal weren't even contenders for Ulster.

My point is that Mayo are now undoubtedly a top 4 side and will be going into the championship next year. If they lose to Galway and a back door game then yes it'll show a massive regression from this year and they will be no longer a top 4 side.

What I'm saying is even after the 04 and 06 finals I wouldn't have thought Mayo would have been considered a top 4 side. Perhaps a top 6 side capable of beating the top teams on a once off basis

If Mayo and Donegal both win their provincial titles and then their quarter finals.. do they meet in the semi then?

    Very interesting indeed.

We all know Mayo's record against reigning AI champions.

Yea but it would be a year to late.

The way Donegal's draw is looking in Ulster they sill be doing well to be in that semifinal as Ulster champs

Tubber through anyway. Didn't get chance go but was an awful game acc to MidWest. Cillian O'Connor was missed. Still 3rd final in a row is incredible for a team who were playing intermediate in 2008 iirc

2004/05 AI champs Ballina one game away from intermediate. Lost to Breaffy today

Was at the 2 matches yesterday and just had to say that Aidan Kilcoyne was by far the stand-out player from the 2 games. It is beyond me why he is not a starting forward for Mayo. The guy could make all the difference. If I was Horan I would be doing all in my power to get him on board.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,530 ✭✭✭davegrohl48

Kilcoyne is in London at the moment anyways. I would rate him ahead of Jason Doherty and Freeman in fairness.
Were there any standouts on the Ballaghadereen side? Great performance to make the county final without the best player in the county.

A few reports in today's papers on a story that originated in the Western People about Horan possibly leavuing his postion due to differences with the Co Board over 'logistical issues', i.e hotels in Dublin for matches , training pitch availability etc

    Say it ain't so

Hoping its all prancing, but the board have form. This board is one of the most brain dead shower I have ever encountered, coming from experience on underage panels and the bS that we have to contend with from a certain secretary, who incredibly 20 years later is still there.

Could turn out to be a risky but clever move from Horan if he gets what he needs to make the next step. The county board aren't always on the same page when it comes to the intercounty set up

Do you have to constantly bring it up? Ballaghaderreen play their football in Mayo. Accept it and move on

The quote was talking about payers 'inside the county'. Plenty of that Ballagh team are Rossies, and I don't mean that they were born or live here.

As long as those players have no option to play for their own county you'll have to grin and bear it, I'm afraid.

That's all well and good but I don't know what you're hoping to achieve by getting all pedantic about people's posts in this thread, every time the subject of Andy Moran or Ballaghaderreen comes up you are constantly reminding us about the poor Rossies stricken out from their homeland, would it kill you to give it a rest?

Fair play to James Horan. The county board have wasted thousands on developing a new stand instead of focusing on what matters. He's holding all the aces here as the county board will face a full on boycott if he walks. Only positive that it will bring is that it will rid of the few "bigshots" who are too set in their ways

    Hardly the case.

Probably should have told Ballagh that if you didn't this cropping up :o

Seriously lads, you are the ones reaping the benefits of a club getting Roscommon County Council grants and all the players of a club verifiably in Roscommon being eligible to play for Mayo and Mayo only - the room for your sensitives on this issue are lost on me and indeed most everyone else.

    Fin.

What difference has reaping the benefits of Roscommon CoCo grants got to do with anything compared to if Mayo CoCo funded Ballagh GAA, unless Roscommon CoCo have secretly built up a goldmine of funds unbehold to Mayo and the rest of the country:eek:

Who honestly gives a fiddlers about this, we don't care what happens in Roscommon, get onto the Ros county board if it bothers you that much or jump onto the Ros GAA thread in fairness.

Back to Mayo GAA - Horan has really gone to ground on this, no sign of him at a few fitness classes which we both attend.
One thing is for sure, IF Horan walks there will be an all out revolt on the County board. Then again as I said already, you are not dealing with people who think or have the ability to think logically.

If Horan walks away (which i don't think he will) there should be a revolt against the Co. Board. The ticket allocation is still raw with a lot of clubs and supporters. If Horan walks, then I'll walk with him, it'll finish me following Mayo and not renew my season ticket

If Horan does go ,and I sincerely hope not, then the line from the County Broad will be as follows

'We could not afford what he was requesting.....it would have put us under sever financial pressure.....in these tough economic times........it would have put club football in the county at financial risk......out first responsibility is to the clubs....etc...etc....'

Which holds a certain amount of merit but at the same time I do not believe that a good manager like Horan should be sacrificed for purely financial reasons, something could be sorted out.

And if it does happen then the next 20 years will look as follows
Horan will go on and win an All Ireland with another county plus a few provincial titles to boot with a few counties
Mayo fans will keep grasping at things like the home-town of the ref and the date of the final as clues to whether we will win the All Ireland or not
