According to the Central bank, SME's employ nearly 800,000 people in Ireland. Clearly they are a very important component of the Irish economy. Yet despite this, there is a report in todays Irish times that banks continue to tighten credit lines for SME's in Ireland. Is the government doing anything or is there anything the government can do to encourage banks to improve their record of lending to SME's?

If I was a bank, I wouldn't lend to any SME's either. Not in the current climate.

I say that as a self-employed business person who is really feeling the pinch.

if SMEs don't meet the tighter (and correctly so) lending criteria, and this leads to them being given less credit, so be it.
Banks shouldnt be forced to give out unnecessarily high risk loans just to appease a vocal minority.
