Exactly. When thinking about casting I think it's more important to focus on the character rather than the physical descriptions. Game of Thrones is an adaptation of A Song of Ice and Fire, it could never be a perfectly faithful recreation of the book on screen as we all imagine the details differently. So far, the producers seem to have recognised this and seem more focused on making GOT the best TV series it can be rather than obsessing over getting everything to be exactly as it was in the books (which even if they did attempt, would be illegal due to some characters ages in the books).

Give Hinds a beard and he'd look the part.

Although personally I don't know why they didn't even consider Ron Perlman

Always pictured Mance as more of a Steven MacKintosh myself (though Robert Carlyle is not a bad shout either)

I still think Robert Carlyle would have been the perfect Davos Seaworth

Ah I dunno, i think Liam Cunningham showed in season 2 he was pretty much born to play the onion knight. My opinion might be coloured by seeing the show before reading the book though I suppose, since i see Liam in my head when i'm reading now.

For me I still don't see him as the right actor for the part. I read the books first and pictured Robert Carlyle. I think he'll always be Davos in my head.

Hinds is currently playing a former President in Political Animals (stars Sigourney Weaver). Worth watching, he's a decent actor.

I'm re-reading AFFC/ADWD in chronological order atm and hadn't realised it until your post but I'm doing the same despite having initially pictured someone more like Carlisle on my first read!

Thats true, sure all the younger characters are much older in the show i suppose.

I think all of them are....from what I can remember from the books Ned and Catelyn are supposed to be around 35, Jon, Robb, and Theon etc 14-16 Loras is 16. Obviously some of the female ages had to be changed for TV but I think the show benefits from the changes, can't see this being any different.

Interesting to see in his imdb that he played a white walker in earlier episodes.
especially if the speculation around Ser Robert Strong is correct, which it almost certainly has to be!

Its really quite hard to watch any Wire actor in any other role and not think of them as being the Wire character.

Mind you, I really havent seen too many of them pop up.

The Chris Partlow actor was in The Taking of Pelham 123; but they only gave him a bit part with 3 or 4 lines.......I thought that was a terrible insut to Chris.

Omar pops up in a few HBO shows, he is chalky white in boardwlak empire and plays a smal role housing jackie jr.
    before he gets whacked
in the sopranos. No doubt he will pop up in AGOT, maybe in one of the free cities
    that Daenarys sacks

Word on the street is they let the guy go because he was a complete asshole and very difficult to work with.

In other news Ciarán Hinds has now been cast in the role originally offered to Dominic West.

I know what you mean I am currently watching Damages Season 2 & Clarke Peters (Lester Freeman) & John Doman(Rawls) are in it,
everytime I see Rawls i here a voice in my head say, "McNulty you are a gaping asshole":D

Damages is a good filler until Breaking Bad & Game of Thrones are back though

Indeed, Avon Barksdale is in the new Dredd movie, and he'll always be Avon. although Lena Headley is the villain and she's just Cersei Lannister now to me.

At least she looks different, Stringer Bell can be as many Marvel characters as he wants but what always goesd through my mind is 'GTood to see Stringer expanding out into Asgard' or 'Stringer really could have done with Ghost Rider's help when McNulty was giving him sh*t'.
