That 48 Jeep seems to have come from Indonesia ( or someone put the plate on just for show ) Reminds me of a Calcutta reg Mahindra jeep I saw here years ago - think he drove it back for the cráic

    Blue850, thanks for that.
Can't believe when he was listing the towns en route to Dublin he omitted the biggest bottleneck of all,Jamestown and the narrowest arch in Ireland! :)

Would he have passed through Jamestown on his way from Carrick to Dublin ?

Nice piece of Social history attached to that lorry.

Jamestown was only bypassed about 20 years ago, as red sean said it was a notorious spot, especially for trucks, moreso for artics. Esentially you relied on somebody giving you a lot of space at the other side so that you could get a truck through it and still swing around without the rear of your trailer hitting the arch. Not easy, certainly in todays rushed culture it would be nigh on impossible.

The "arch" has been damaged a good few times by trucks, IIRC my mother who is from the area told me it was a proper arch until some time in the 50's or 60's when it was badly damaged by a truck.

The complete arch was there until the 70's . I remember it well. I can only imagine the amount of "prayers" said in that truck when he had to stop suddenly due to a car not giving way. And her loaded with eggs of all things!:D

    I'd agree, but -
    1) Taking a photo of something while I'm moving is sometimes impossible so I'm just alerting everybody to it's location IF someone else lives nearby and can take a better shot than a blurry 'on the move' job.
    2) Sometimes the owner doesn't like someone taking a shot
    3) Issues with uploading - I seem to have to put my photos into Photobucket before uploading them here - time is against me on this one :(

On the Classic Car Club of Andalusia September Run

As some of you may know me and 73D have emigrated to the Costa Del Sol On my first run with the Classic Car Club of Andalusia I was surprised to come across this Galway reg Speedster.

    P1010712.jpg

One of the last shots of 73D before she goes on Spanish Historical plates

    P1010729.jpg

And if you are interested the rest of the September run to El Chorro as a slideshow - the Jag by the way is a 1964 copy lol

Late 70's number on that. So it's either an original Speedster imported into Ireland then or it's a kit car on a 70's Galway Beetle chassis. Nice car either way.

What's the story on Spanish vinvet plates , discount on tax ? Whats the road tax like generally for bigger engines, same as here ?

    Hello Capri

There are two types of reg here in Spain - Your day car which is four numbers followed by three letters - the first letter denotes the year and 2012 is H. As in Ireland the NCT, called ITV here, is the same - 1st four years exempt, then bi-yearly until it gets to ten and then yearly. It gets to classic status at 25 I think.

The second type of registration is Spanish Historical plates. It is denoted by H on the left. The shot of the white 350 SL shows this. It costs more to register the car and a lot of time and inspections. You are suppose to be limited mileage and club runs only etc. I will insure mine as a daily driver! The advantages are less stringent ITV (all vehicles must have one), its tested once every 5 years and there is no road tax. It also adds value to the vehicle.

Tax on cars is cheaper here I don't know how much. Insurance is more or less the same price. To insure mine as daily driver TR6, 2.5l, value 25,000 full ncb, no convictions, fully comp is E589

One thing you may not know is that whilst they don't have VRT as we know it, they have transmission tax on the car - beginning when you buy it new. Every time the car is sold a further 6% is paid - and its not 6% of the price you agreed it 6% of what the traffic department value the car at. Tends work against you with newer cars but in your favour with older ones as cars hold their value a bit better here. The purchaser is also liable for any back road tax on the car but the Traffic Department makes that clear and what that amount is before the car is put in your name and then you can re-negotiate with the seller.

I hope you enjoy your run Jack! You'd like them here! Top down and sunshine!! Better get OKI on the boat!

    Steve

Gas the way there's no avoiding the road tax there - like Greece where the property tax is put on your electricity bill :eek::eek:

We think the Greeks and Spanish have ways of avoiding taxes - seems like we're the cute hoors :D:D No wonder the Troika want to bring us into line
( Mind you, if taxes were FAIR, then maybe there wouldn't be as much avoidance ??? )

Today's sightings on the N11 (going opposite way tho ) - VERY clean maroon VW T25 p/u with chrome trim rings and a 'taxi / custard yellow' Porsche 928 .
