Thanks for the link, it was my Grandfather's car, he went through a bit of an American phase, he had a Packard after this one. I think the photo was taken in Dublin, near Doherty's coal, but not sure where that was. I did a quick Google search but came up with nothing. Thanks again.

Dohertys Coal Yard was in Ringsend AFAIK.

There were several '59 Fords sold here including station wagons.

Attached is a black and white pic of one taken on Hill Street. It was owned at the time by Joe Headon.

I have also attached a pic of the only one I know of that has survived. It is DZA registered.

As far as I'm aware all American '59 Fords sold here were V8 and this may have something to do with their lack of survival.

    Hey Kevin,

Would love to see your full archive of American car pics in Ireland.

    Any chance?

    No archive I'm afraid.

Just a small number of photographs- most of which I am unable to find.

That's great Kevin, thanks very much for the info. I have been doing some research into some of his old cars and I've found two of them, I wonder did he own that Fairlane too.

Joe Headon, RIP - the 'man' for American cars

Hill St yanks - bought a few 'bargains' off Joe - 1 Plymouth wagon was brought out to me with no rear brake linings, just a Vise grip clamping the brake pipe :eek::eek:

He had tea chests full of spares in the attic.

Wayne went on the drugs I think and did himself in :(

Ahh La belle France  - where bling never caught on ! Chap just back said they enjoy the good life, not the bling life. Good food and wine rather than a new car

That BMC walkthru is a real rare machine ;) What's with the 'new' plates on the old 203, the old 'départment' regs seem to be getting phased out ?

    Great pics jrar.

Never seen of heard of the 929. Only 11 left in the UK according to howmanyleft.co.uk.

I presume most of them succumbed to the rust here....

Seems to be the way alright certainly outside of the big cities - even my young kids commented that you don't see many "big cars" on the autoroutes and indeed French-registered BMW/Audi/Merc etc. are not very common-place. Apart from the desire to support their indigenous motor industry, there does appear to be less desire for cars to be seen as some sort of conspicuous consumer purchase.

A generalisation perhaps, but our roads are awash with high-end models in comparison.

The "new" national system is 4/5 years in place now and dept. numbers are harder to read especially in moving traffic - despite being a French-made car, I'm assuming the 203 was "imported" from some other country and then given current series plates.

afaik, if that car had an old style reg and changed hands in the last few years it must take a new reg. that new reg now stays with the car, as it changes hands.

    Checked on this site -

seems if the owner of a vintage car in France changes then a new logbook and reg is issued - much like we seem to have 47D100101 now because the almighty computerised system cannot cope with simple things such as ZC78 :mad:

From the Harvest Festival at Lough Rynn, Co Leitrim today, parked space for exhibitors was a disaster, organizers underestimated the turnout in a big way.

Must have been over 30 exhibitors cars parked outside when I was leaving at 2.30 and at least 2 miles of a tailback of traffic heading towards the show at that time

That car could be so good, WTF inspired them to tack that amount of sh1te onto it. I have nothing against modding cars but FFS keep it decent.

Some very nice machines there, nice to see a few commercials out and about as well, something I'm always happy to look at at a show. I particularly like the elegance of the steering set up on that Farmall tractor.

The Thames Trader with genuine old Roscommon reg. does it for me. Any idea what year?
    Great pics. Blue 850!

    DI 9010 would have been a late 1961 registration. (DI 8655 1/1/61 - DI 9243 1/1/62).

Its a 1961. Theres a piece of paper stuck on the side window with its history, I've a photo of it at home I'll post later, but a friend of mine met one of its old driver's who said he often did Carrick on Shannon to Dublin in it twice a day, no power steering and a 4.30am start.
