Sorry to bring this up again lads, I probably missed it on the thread, but do ye reckon Sahin was the player Rodgers was talking about when he mentioned 'a signing that would excite the fans'?

If not, then today/tomorrow could be interesting.

Too good to be true, but if we got £5m for Adam and £15m for Carroll.....

I think the Adam money is possibly earmarked for Dempsey.
Rumours that 2 Mexican players were shown around Melwood yesterday.
I sincerely hope it wasn't these 2 amigos

id say BR had\had plans for a marquee signing but maybe didnt bank on some players not being gone yet...

im almost certain though, going by football manager, that with the click of a button the budget can be adjusted to suit the transfer...or couldnt BR assume the role of Bilbao manager under an assumed name and sell to liverpool on the cheap...

    all seems sound to me.

i am growing concerned about the striker situation...like...suarez isnt clinical enough...and thats just being overly critical of his game to be fair, but we do need a bit more up top...

like dempsey doesnt solve the problem at all...all he does is free up suarez to be a striking option...

i cant imagine borini lighting the place up, altough i hope i am wrong.

im delighted im spending the next day travelling from the land of toffiffe to my graduation tomorrow...by the time i get back online, ill be disecting the aresnal game.

    apologies for typos...hate german keyboards.

    Prediction:
    In: Dempsey

    Out: Spearing, Adam

I'd say Andy and Walcott will stay where they are until January at least.

Andy Carroll wants to stay at Anfield and fight for his place despite Liverpool's attempts to move him on before the transfer window closes.
Manager Brendan Rodgers has tried to persuade the striker to accept his time at the club is over as he attempts to raise funds for new signings.
    Andy Carroll career stats
    Newcastle (2006-11): 91 games, 33 goals
Preston (loan Aug 2007-08): 12 appearances, 1 goal
    Liverpool (2011-present): 57 appearances, 11 goals
    England (2010-present): 7 appearances, 2 goals
But Carroll remains committed to Liverpool, having already turned down one proposed move to West Ham.
Newcastle's offer to take Carroll on a season-long loan remains on the table.
Liverpool must raise funds in order to step up their interest in Fulham forward Clint Dempsey, while Arsenal's Theo Walcott also remains a target.
With Charlie Adam attracting interest from Stoke City and Fenerbahce, and Jay Spearing likely to leave on loan to either Bolton or Wolves, Liverpool may be able to free up the funds to make an offer for Dempsey in the next 24 hours.
But unless a fresh injection of investment is made available to Rodgers, he must convince Carroll that a move away from Anfield represents the best step for his career.

I don't think we are in a position to have £35m players as third-choice strikers

    Brendan Rodgers
There remains a slight possibility that West Ham may revive their interest in the 23-year-old by making an improved offer, but it is understood the club may need to sell a player first to free up cash.
While Newcastle manager Alan Pardew has admitted he would welcome the addition of Carroll, the clubs have not discussed the matter since Liverpool dismissed Newcastle's initial offer out of hand.
Carroll will play no part in the Europa League play-off round, second leg against Hearts on Thursday night.
"The reality is, financially, we need to repair, so the players being linked for the money mentioned, I don't have the ability to sign in this window," Rodgers said.
"I respect players and I'm precise with my information so they know where they stand. We all come into the profession knowing what the job is. Ultimately, it comes down to what your objective is as a player.
"I can only be straight. I've made it clear I have a 1 to 11, cover players and development players. Some of the development players may become starters. If you fit outside that, I will tell you. Then it's up to the player. Does the player want to play football?
"You don't need to be a rocket scientist to see Andy has been a cover player for us and has been excellent in terms of his attitude and acceptance of where he is at, but as a football club, I don't think we are in a position to have £35m players as third-choice strikers, or wingers who are on £5m-£6m a year. This is the challenge I have."

Sahin was always a big IF. Assaidi was apparently a back-up to Tello, so could have been either of them, but could also have been Borini, a quick young striker...

Borini was already at the club when Rodgers made the comment. My guess is that Sahin was the player he was talking about.

Was he? I thought he said that very early on.

Either way, the signings have been positive and measured, so the excitement is for the overall program, not only Sahin...

When he made the comment Borini hadn't signed, A few days later he had so I'd imagine the he was talking about him or Dempsey really who was highly rumoured at the time and a week later or so the FSG site had that Dempsey article mess up.

    edit- duplicate post..

Anyone else wondering if Spearing's transfer negotiations will involve very little talking and him just pointing where he wants to go?

Rodgers appeared to be more downbeat about signings yesterday than he was at the weekend. I would imagine, as others have said, we will move one or two on and we will probably see Dempsey come in.

I have to say I am distinctly unimpressed with the public flogging of Andy Carroll which leaves him in a horrible place in the likely event that he isn't sold.

I am a big fan of the guy I admit but I really hope that Rodgers didn't take a calculated gamble that Carroll would be sold if he is still here come Saturday. His openess regarding Carroll has been embraced by some but I am not a fan of it to be honest.

Looking forward to taking stock on Saturday and seeing our final squad for what is likely to be a rollercoaster of a season.

He made the comment at least once after Borini had signed when he referred again to two players the club were looking at, one of whom he said would excite the supporters.

So if he said it both before and after Borini signed, then I will assume he was not talking about Borini.

Could be a case that he is trying to get the player to hand in a transfer request. If so I doubt the player would do so as if he gets sold without handing in one, he can get his lump sum payment from the club.

Me neither. It's not professional tbh.

If anything it will drive his price down seeing as we seem so desperate to sell.

The Times reporting that Man City have agreed a deal with Scott Sinclair. That pretty much leaves us for a clear run at Walcott, so long as we can shift Carroll.

Dempsey is likely contingent on shifting Spearing/Adam, which should be sorted.

I suppose it doesn't really matter but I definitely remember him saying we would be excited about 1 player and we hadn't signed anyone at the time. I can't remember him saying it since tbh.

Hopefully I'm wrong and we'll still make that signing.

I think his honesty is refreshing. It's common knowledge the club is looking to move Carroll on and it leaves the player in no doubt as to what his prospects will be for the season ahead should he decide to remain at the club.

I really hope Carroll makes the move to West Ham. It would be best for both club and player.

Good to see the emphasis on development as well, I'd expect a good few of the young lads playing big parts in the Cup games and EC squads, about time that happened. Interesting there is no talk of Pacheco going as well.

If that was true, we would have accepted one of the bids made to us. We may want to move him on, but don't look likely to accept less than our valuation.

At this stage, the West Ham deal looks good for us - I've little doubt they will stay up, they are bringing in some decent players. Assuming the owners will accept that and release the full funds now...

Completely forgot about him after pre season. I've a lot of sympathy for him.

They must be looking to get rid of him if he's not on the bench tonight at least.

Oh and goal.com have an "Exclusive" that we are trying to close the Dempsey deal by including some fringe or your players, but doesn't say which players or whether sale/loan.

    Not much of an exclusive...

The last time we did something like this we lost Kacanicklic, who's been excellent for them so far this season. Dalle Valle went too. Hopefully we're not stupid enough to do it again without putting in buy-back clauses.

Talk over the weeks that Pacheco was off to Villareal, I think it was. But most Spanish clubs have very little cash, I can't see anyone stumping up £2M for Dani...

Agreed, should stick to loans. Wilson, Flanagan, Eccleston?

Maybe, hopefully they'll give him a final season to see how he does.

Wilson I'd have thought, Eccleston needs a Championship level club for it to be any use.
