To be honest, we did very very well without lucas yesterday. Ill be happy if we can have a decent season even when hes injured.
Already looks like Joe Allen could be our most important player. If only we'd had him last season when Lucas got injured.

    Where the hell is Doni?

Is he off doing hostage negotiations or saving the rainforest or something?
Let's nip this one in the bud. The Doni jokes were never funny for anyone over 12 years old.

I can confirm that this is wrong.

I think hes doing alright, hes not an out and out striker but he needs to grab those balls that are coming into the box.

Or just pull out in time :o

Doni is in Brazil looking for a new club or finalising a deal as far as I know.

I agree with Kess. Can't for the life of me understand the severe crticism Borini is receiving already. People are even comparing him to Kuyt which is just ridiculous.

Play him through the middle, he will score goals. And that's what you lads need.

You have to love his attitude. Was bloody brilliant when he turned to the crowd and did this yesterday.

Been a few years since I could say this, but I'm excited about our midfield.

I'll be honest, most of my info on Joe Allen was stat related, as I had only seen Swansea play a few times last season, but he impressed me yesterday with his all round performance, not just his passing.

Sterling, great to have a winger capable and willing to go past a defender, it adds so much to our game.

Thought Shelvey played great yesterday, which was doubly impressive considering how bad he played vs Hearts. If he could become consistent he will be a huge asset this year.

And still got Sahin to go!

The roar when he did that was unreal. He backed up his gestures to the crowd with a crazy workrate and did not back down from anyone on the pitch, so the guy is quickly becoming a stand favourite.

Move him to the centre and the goals will follow imho.

Yeah, I always like to see players interact with the crowd a bit more too! Shows a bit of passion! Football365 weren't so enamoured though, from their 16 Conclusions page:
Perhaps it's unjust to compare the pair but it's fair to say that Pablo Zabaleta must have glanced across at Kolo Toure and been mighty glad that he was tasked with stopping Fabio Borini rather than Sterling. It's way too soon to judge but it's difficult to see Borini as little more than a willing runner. An upgrade on Dirk Kuyt? Only in terms of age, perhaps.

Talking of which - we would suggest that Borini actually produces something in a Liverpool shirt before he does the old 'come on' gesture at the Kop. You have to earn the right to gee up one of the loudest banks of fans in English football, fella.

I agree. Even if he was brought in to replace Kuyt, you can't rate a player at that early stage.

Haha I was watching the match at home, and I'll admit...when Borini did that I even stood and shouted "C'mon the 'pool".

I think anyone who analyses him trying to whip up the crowd a bit as much as football365 have, are frankly poor tabloid journalists.

As impressive as Allen was yesterday, I am a cynic and won't be claiming Alonso has been replaced after two league games (one of which was a dizzy-aster).

    Very impressed with Sterling obviously.

Boroni should have got himself a goal, ditto Suarez from Boroni's outstanding interception.

Our defence is scaring me though. Johnson was given a tough time second half by Tevez and, although I was happy overall with Skrtel, Kelly and Coates, playing well for 90 mins means nothing if we are going to make these sucidal mistakes once or twice in a game.

I didn't realise Skrtel got the touch on the cross that took it away from Pep (I don't blame him for trying to deal with it though) but Kelly really should have vollyed away first time.

Small bit harsh on Kelly, he was caught a bit flat footed because im 100% sure he wasnt expecting the ball to make it that far.

The ball was there to be vollied high and away rather than taking a touch whilst facing into your own goal/6-yard box.

Perhaps I am being harsh, but you don't take a touch in that position imo.

Any links to clips of the game yesterday? Saw little or no highlights. Would love to see a bit of Sterling.

Don't think it's being harsh, didn't notice Skrtel getting the touch on the ball myself and thought Kelly was fully to blame. It was a schoolboy mistake.

However, Rodgers refused to blame the Slovakian defender for his side's failure to win.
"It's all part of the journey," he added. "I commend his courage to get on the ball. The easy thing is to smash it up the pitch.
"There is no blame here. He is a strong character and the other players and staff rallied around him."

The Independent (UK version) gave player ratings for yesterday but I think it must have been Stevie Wonder looking at the game for them

I think Borini will definitely come good, its just a matter of those around him picking up his runs and playing an early pass. I think Sahin will be a massive help to him. Suarez could have played Borini through in the first half with a little left to right ball when Borini drifted inside, but Suarez held on to it. The type of fast ball which Sterling played, and Borini almost scored from, is exactly what he needs.

He didnt take a touch, Skrtels header planted it straight on his thigh very quickly. It bounced off him and Yaya cleaned up

Would disagree. He did ok yesterday despite being played out of position. He was in the right sided position for much of the game and that is by far his worst position.

He showed plenty yesterday to suggest that he should be used in the centre rather than out wide. Hell of a worker and he chased back and fought for everything. He also made it very difficult for City to have too much link up play on City's left flank.

I'm not judging already by any means, or faulting his workrate, I just think at times yesterday he lacked the turn of pace or bit of skill to go past someone and create a scoring opportunity. His pass completion rate was pretty good at 86% (I think) so he kept the ball well enough but when playing in a front three and especially in a wing forward position, I think he just needs to be able the penetrate the opposition defense a bit better. As you said, If hes played in the center than I think his movement would get him chances on goal , especially if he gets good service from wingers/full-backs but imo he looks a bit ineffective in the WF position.

I must have been in a different part of the crowd to yourself yesterday Kess as there were plenty of moans and groans at Borini throughout. He can whip up the crowd all he wants imo but as long as he's missing great chances i'll find it hard to get too excited about him. I still don't think he's a first 11 player but thats only my opinion. Was interesting to see him and Suarez changing throughout, i would agree Borini looks better when played through the centre (and Suarez looks better outside too so that would be win-win).

Allen had a good game but faded towards the end and was another to attract the moans and groans too as the game wore on. Personally i thought Gerrard and Shelvey were our two best players. Nice to see Stevie man-up after a poor showing the previous weekend. Was delighted to see David Silva on the bench, his touch is so good. Wonder how many goals Yaya Toure would score a season if they played him off a striker, players just bounce off the guy.

Strange match, came away disappointed not to win (especially after hearing the Arsenal full time result and Spurs slipping up Saturday) but we would have lost that sort of game last season probably conceding a third late on. I still think we need one more goalscorer brought in, and i'm really excited about seeing Sahin now. We are close to having a really good first 11.
