    Hi all,

My ubuntu machine, needs replacing (after 6 years of hard service) and I really don't want to pay the windows tax, and then wind up deleting it off the system. Talk about a waste of money.

I don't have a huge budget, would be looking around the €250 mark at a stretch, I reckon a lappy with no OS will be cheaper due to no windows tax, but getting one in Ireland is proving very very difficult.

Anyone have any idea where I'd pick up such a machine?

In my experience a Laptop WITH Windows is cheaper than one without, for the same/similar hardware spec.

Something I have done before is to refund the license after buying laptops from Dell.
Contacted sales after receiving the order and requested it.

The Windows EULA allows for refusal and refund through your OEM and if a dispute arises you should be able to contact MS directly.

Dell is a tier 1 OEM though so you are looking about €40 to €50 of a refund for a basic version of Windows.

Disclaimer: A friend of mine also attempted this and was refused. But I'm pretty sure that specific sales representative was in the wrong.
