    Hey guys

Just wondering can anyone tell me if a clean licence is a licence with no endorsements. If you had penalty points would this mean you didn't have a clean licence?

    Thanks in advance

    Is there an actual definition?

what more do you need? if its "clean" it means there are no points or endorsements on the licence.
if there are points or endorsements then it is not "clean"
i don't know if that is acceptable as a legal definition but it's really not that complicated is it?
ask over on the legal pages if in doubt.

I did wonder if the OP was serious. But surely, if you have penalty points then the licence is endorsed....

Throw it in the bath with abit of Dettol or Cillet bang, will get them points right out

Anytime I've inquired its a licence free from endorsements without a ridiculous amount of points

    Seems so (link)
    Endorsement
An endorsement is basically a record that gives details of your motoring convictions. It is not physically recorded on your driving licence. Instead your driving licence record is held on the National Vehicle and Driver File operated by the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport.

The penalty points system of endorsement is also by entry in the licence record. Endorsements remain on your licence record for 3 years and must be notified to your insurance company when applying for motor insurance. Endorsements on your licence record will often lead to an increase in your motor insurance premium. Second or subsequent endorsements often result in disqualification from driving.

If an employer asks for someone with a clean licence I cannot think that he means anything but a licence without points.

Had mine in the back pocket of my jeans that went into the wash, it was fairly clean after that...

My employer asked me when i started, I said "well ive a few points" they said "nah endorsements etc is all that matters, never mind points, unless you've 10"

So what he's looking for are court convictions I presume.

clean = no points, or endorsements, or anything of the like. You could spill guinness on it and it would be considered clean, unless you go out driving with a few guinness in your belly and get caught...then you got yourself a dirty license. Hope that explains it.

Clean licence is an old expression where if you had an endorsement it was a big dirty stamp on your licence so not clean.

if you have penalty points then you do not have a clean licence.

Under the term of enquiry, you actually do.
    Is there an actual definition?

No, just a saying going back a few years.

He does. It's relative to endorsements.

    This summarises it.

    Clean = no endorsements.

I would take it to mean no points or any points are expired, however an employer asking for a clean licence may tolerate 3 points for example. You'll have to ask the employer if your exact circumstances rule you out.

Dettol will only get 99.9% of point off therefore it will not be clean.

I would define a clean driving license as one without endorsements on it excluding penalty points. E.g. no previous convictions bans etc.
If it would include points (which are a form of endorsement fair enough) one would be hard pressed to find anyone in the country with a clean license I reckon.

Definitely relates to endorsements but if you have penalty points declare them to employer if you are going on his commercial motor policy.

I know, I was using it as a hyperbole, but probably not too far from the truth especially with the speeding situation being a bit ridiculous to be honest. Like cop has a bad day and fines you for 5 miles over the limit and its 2 points the same as if you were 25 miles over the limit.
