Touareg '06 Exhuast Workshop

Out in the car today and filled up in my usual station.
Drove perhaps 20 miles to the shop where I buy the newspapers.

All as normal - come out of shop and start engine to get the 'exhaust workshop' warning light come up.

It is on but does not flash.

I had a read of the manual and it's all doom and gloom.

It mentioned lambda sensor. I will call my local garage tomorrow.

The car is 2006 and has done 40,000 miles.

I checked the engine - hot obviously given the day that is in it and the dip stick handle was not fully in - not sure if this is just how it was after last service but upon checking the oil it was a little low not min but close.

I will let the engine cool down fully and top up the oil.

A quick google would suggest it is not uncommon and just wondering if any of you guys have ever had it on a VW?

No loss of power, no odd smoke just the light is on and warning comes up.

Given the low oil it could be using more than I would expect and therefore a filter could be clogged - could be the dpf filter - not sure if this is on a 2006?

The internet tells me that whilst on is not good - flashing is a lot worse.

Anyone know about adblue diesel exhaust fluid?

Sounds like an exhaust sensor and nothing else.

Adblue is for modern trucks for reducing emmisions.

I asked about Adblue as it is on US Touarergs underneath the sparewheel 21 litre tank and they get about 10,000 miles per fill.

Just an update as the oil was low I topped it up with a litre.

The warning light was on first thing this am but upon my second journey it was not on.

Could the low oil levels have thrown the sensor?

- nothing since and nothing untoward with the car so 'touch wood' all seems to be in order.

Great stuff Guvnor it isnt too often you get away that light. FYI keep an eye on your oil filter cartridge I have heard a few of them popping and throwing all the oil everywhere...

An update - the light came back on today.

Checked the oil and thankfully it is pretty much as it was after I last put in the litre a month ago.

I will give the garage a call. I use a kwik-fit garage in Newry and find them good - a sensor is hardly a job for a vw garage or is it?

Diagnostics can be checked once a garage has the right equipment?

Today is another humid day and hot (ish) don't know if this is me clutching at straws or if it has any relevance.

I'll ask about the oil filter cartridge, thanks Corkie!

On the phone for a good 15-20 mins with Eddie in Kwik-Fit.
Going up on Saturday for a diagnostic check - if particulate filter there is a specialist nearby who removes it, puts in a solution overnight and refits it.

Particulate filter is according to Eddie in the 4 figure ball park.

He did not think it was a lamda sensor and said given the light was on it would/could mean the lamda sensor is doing it's job etc.

Also mentioned an additive that one can add once a year to a full tank that helps keep the engine a bit cleaner.

Mentioned using good fuel and I use Applegreen - they are good but I think he was referencing the additives that some co's add to their product.

Not too bad really and hopefully a reasonable outcome on Saturday. Will update when I get the results back on Saturday.

I'm not convinved about this at all. For a couple of weeks I filled up at the M1 Applegreen near Castlebellingham and my 1.9 TDI Jetta ran like a pig and the economy dropped way down. Work now has me elsewhere so I've filled up at Clairehall Tesco a couple of times and ran a bit of Petrol through the system and the car is now flying and I'm back to 56mpg on a combined journey. I'll be giving Applegreen a miss in future.

Thanks Green. How long ago were you using applegreen? One northbound (I use) or southbound?

The soap opera that is this thread means that the light was on today but on two short journeys.

House to shop - light on.
Shop to Work - light on.
Work to home - light off.

All short journeys albeit motorway but all sub 6 miles.

Still going to call Eddie in Kwik Fit on Saturday am to see what the bosch diagnostics says.

I think this is what we'd call an intermittent fault!

Exhaust Workshop came on again on Friday 13th - well ominous but was off again on the 14th.

It came on again on Sunday 22nd and was on still today when dropped in for a service with Kwik-Fit.

They hooked up the Bosch diagnostics to it and two faults came up:

3069 Swirl Flap Control Adaptation
1805 Glow Plug 6 Failure

A bottle of BG44K fuel additive was added to the tank to see if this aids the intermittent fault.

I am off now to check the 3069 fault above - if anybody knows what this is please let me know.:)

No joy on the error codes - thought it would be easier!

On another note - anyone any views on tyre choice for a Touareg - have/had P Zeros on there but looking at Goodyear instead.

A very late update back on 10/08/12 it was taking to a VW dealer in Chester.

2 faults found and they were:

Bank 2 Manifold Flap Motor

No 6 Glow Plug

Both of which were replaced.

The car had 49101 miles at the time.

The thread is being updated to night as the Exhaust Workshop Warning light came on again. Mileage is now near 90,000.

Fix kit probably won't work. They rarely do in our experience. Those manifolds are crazy money from VW alright. Are you using a dealer for the work?

The issue is the indy would buy the part from VW.

I think the 1st one bought back in 2012 from VW in Chester was a reconditioned one!

TBH this appears to be a design flaw really - parts appear reasonably flimsy for their job.

Waste of time usually. You can buy that part from the dealer by the way, you don't have to go online.

If on the blink as it is - obviously best to replace it sooner rather than later?

Do you swap it for an identical part or is the new part an improvement so might last longer than the original?

I took it to a VW dealer in Newry - turned out it was a throttle valve which has since been replaced.

Another common issue. The valves are available aftermarket at a significan saving over the VW price.

Which unfortunately I did not do.

I think these are fixable units as they suffer from a build-up of carbon? I took the original one home and intend on cleaning it up.

The only good thing to come from the garage was the contact for a local-ish mechanic who does excellent work at a fair price.
