Nevermind. I could be wrong. Looked on their website and couldn't see it. Saw it posted on a Liverpool news page on facebook and posted here before I checked.

God I really hope Lucas comes back stronger and better than ever. Would be such a shame for him to put in all that effort improving his game for something like this to set him back now. If he is the same player as he was before his injury does anybody else see him as a potential future captain/vice captain of Liverpool?

No doubt about it. Team really missed his simple leadership after he got injured.

Eff off Newcastle. You already got a good laugh at how much we paid for the player, something at least one Newcastle official stated in public, now you want us to bend over with a loan deal?

Agreed i'm sick of these loan deals... get your cash out if you want our players..

Strootman & Mertens? What are they, joined at the hip? Already made one double move together from Utreacht, would be odd to see them do the same again a year later.

I would love to have Mertens alright, would fit into a forward three or a supporting 3 very well.

Strootman I'd be less pushed on, would prefer a better centre midfielder in beside Lucas, though he would provide good cover. I suppose it all depends on how much we have available.

Difficult at the moment to offload fringe players for any reasonable sum of money. I know we [Arsenal] are having huge issues with it because our fringe players are on so much - we were happy to loan Denilson back to Sao Paolo [because they couldn't afford a fee] just to get his wages off the books.

Our size of clubs are in a difficult bind in terms of players coming and going - we don't have the money of City, United or Chelsea but we still have to pay premium to pick up the players they dont want.

I knew I saw something relating to Mertens and Liverpool earlier but I couldn't find anything elsewhere.

I've mentioned Mertens in the past on here. He's my number choice for LW if we are in the market for one. Direct, , intelligent, quite skillful, quick with the ball (not out and out pace if you get me but quick enough) and a very good finisher to boot. Right in the prime of his career too.

Strootman has been linked with a number of clubs recently including Inter Milan, United amongst one or two others. Someone who should have started at the Euros for the national team. He'd be someone who compliment Lucas really well IMO, be it beside him in a 4-2-3-1 or just ahead of him in a Rodgers' 4-3-3. Really would be the time now to make a move for him because another season at PSV, he'll be going to one of the clubs I mentioned surely next summer, if not this summer.

Totally agree with everything you said about Mertens. A front three in a 4-3-3 of

    Mertens - Borini - Suarez

Would be a mouth watering prospect, especially if a genuine quality CAM or AM was brought in to sit ahead of Lucas + A. nother in the centre.

    We could certainly do worse.

It pays to have a counter attack option.

Hard to believe he's only just 23.

8 more goals and 11 more assists in the league than Downing last season. you could do/(are doing) a lot worse. Like you, I hope it doesn't happen ;)

A lot of talk going around that it will be announced to tie in with the tour, could be people just putting 2+2 together and coming up with 5 though.

Now....don't shoot the messenger, this is a rumours and gossip thread after all, but this has appeared on Twitter, and in fairness there have been some rumours about Strootman already this year.

With a deal for Carroll potentially on the cards, then would Mertens be a worthwhile replacement? We all know that scoring in Holland doesn't necessarily guarantee success elsewhere. Strootman could come in and provide a partner for Lucas, as well as decent cover if Lucas was slow coming back, injured or not up to his recently set high standards.

Fee does seem high, wasn't it about 13 million that they moved for last year as a job lot deal? You'd have to assume that if that figure was correct then there are people on the way out to help fund it.

Would be absolutely fantastic particularly if we get Dempsey in too. If we get rid of Kuyt, Maxi, Aqualini, Cole, Carroll I'm pretty sure we'd save on wages for Borini, Mertens, Strootman, Walcott and Dempsey.

While there wouldn't be a set position for any of these players (though Suarez RW if I'm being really picky with your line up :P), be it Mertens, Carzola or whoever it may be, interchanging positions would be a key feature.

Having people running off the ball was the most noticeable things missing from the games we mainly dominated last season besides the obvious ****e in front of goal. I know we have lacked pace for many years (it's something that has irked me in the past), and whatever pace we have had it's been usually players with a lack of footballing intelligence (Cisse for example) but it's not completely necessary if we can get people like the two names that we have been linked with today and I've mentioned above, the movement off the ball with a ball playing/box to box CM or a CAM (could be wrong I don't see us in the market for both) would be fantastic to see.

I think you're being somewhat harsh on Strootman tbh. He's a box to box midfielder who can play deeper or further forward if needed. I really believe he's someone who'd compliment Lucas well. In saying that, I still dream of us signing Nuri :)

edit - forgot about Aqualini when typing my post :o Admittedly I still don't see him at Anfield come the end of August. But a willing Aqualini would be a starting XI player for me. That would probably mean Gerrard CM which I don't like as I've stressed before.

Been saying this for at least two years now and my old housemate during that time, (also a fellow red) laughed it off.

I'm actualy kinda nervous that he won't be quite the same player he was before his injury. You hear of players coming back from injuries like his one all the time and never reaching the same heights again. If anyone can do it tho it's Lucas!

Suarez is the right sided wide forward/RW in my formation and Merten is the LW/Light sided wide forward.

You don't rate Strootman that highly? Think he's a fantastic player myself, and at 22 he's only going to get better. A proper all round midfielder with very good passing ability.
