Arma 3 Alpha starts next month after Gamescom, afaik A3 is ready to roll with Dayz from the outset. Rather than A2 which is hindering Dayz, i reckon Dayz will ship free with Arma 3 but it will be a 50 quid game rather than 35/40 it has been.

Will let you know what Arma 3 is like when we get the Alpha :pac:

once i get this off steam of bohemia is it hard to actually install it then, is it as simple as running an .exe or do i need to move files around or anything like that?

If you are using Steam, be sure to run both ArmA2 and Arrowhead once each.
Then install a Beta patch for ArmA 2. The Boards server is running patch number 94444. Here is a link, download and run it. Should be pretty quick and hit the Ok button.

Then grab Six Updater. And use it to install DayZ.

Fairly easy to get it going but it can throw some issues.

thanks for the links, im not sure when exactly i can get it as bandwidth is a problem at the minute so i might have to wait a while, going to hold out for a daily sale on steam anyway in the mean time. really looking forward to playing this

My experience so far in DayZ

Spawned first yesterday and ended up lost in the "mountains" for about an hour running around aimlessly.

Eventually respawned, found some town, crawled around it for about another hour looking for a door to go in. Zombies see me, chase me for a few mins, then kill me. Spawn again and try the same thing, zombies kill me again.

I haven't found a single item yet but for some reason I cant wait to play it again later. :)

Is there no actual map in the game? The "M" button brings up an option for a map but I cant see one.

Any other quick tips for a novice?

Oh, logged onto a couple of servers where it was dark, is it impossible to play in darkness without the right items yeh? Presume so as I couldn't see sh!t. :)

You need to find a map, few people print one out and put it on their walls.

Tbh a compass is more important than a map.

You have to find a map in game, crouch walk/run around town you'll be less likely to be spotted, use the ALT key on the keyboard to look around you every few seconds to see Zeds and avoid there path.

Not all houses can be entered, check the map here
Cherno for example, Red are Military Spawns, might get a good gun, green dots are Residential and blue are commercial, all have differing classes of loot that spawns. Click a dot to see what you might get in those buildings.

As for Darkness, check the timezone of the server, if its late in ireland say 10-11pm look for a UTC- server, so its daylight there time.

Cool, didn't realise a map was actually one of things I needed to find. I've read numerous places to stay out of towns but I couldn't really find anywhere else to go. Will persist again later and open a map in a browser that I can Alt-Tab too.

    Cheers. :)

There are maps to be found ingame.
Everyone uses an external map though, if you have the Steam Overlay or a second monitor you can load up this one.
    It shows loot spawns.

Next time you spawn keep an eye to the bottom right of your screen. It will say something like:

    1 Days
    Electro
    Chernarus

Pay special attention to the second line, it tells you where you are.

You spawn with a flashlight. At night, open your inventory with G and find the yellow flashlight on your 'Toolbelt', down the bottom. Right click on that and click Remove From Toolbelt. That moves it to your Pistol Slot where you can use L to turn it on and off. Be aware that other players can see the beam and if you shine it into someones face or onto a white wall in front of you it'll ruin your natural night-vision.

EDIT: Note, moving a torch to your pistol slot moves your pistol and all it's ammo to your backpack. If you do not have enough space (6 slots for pistol, 1 slot per mag) then things get deleted.

Nutz, left a car in the hills over stary sober, got loads of fuel, hopefully the fecker that shot me doesnt find it, i did manage to get a grenade off at him so hopefully scared the bejaysus out of him, died twice in starry hils in the last 20 minutes!!
What makes me laugh is after I die the afterthought occurs to me why didn't i check if they were friendly at least, the panic of seeing some one in game forces me to pull the trigger.

    Must try to be friendlier!

How did you get to Stary so quick?

    Taxi.

actually I spawned at Kamenka ran to Sosnovka, and found a car someone moved to the barn outside town, then drove to starry, I was trying to get my M16a4 back from my dead body in starry from teh first death. Probably the same chief got me.

I wonder whats the despawn time of dead player bodies

I think Rocket would prefer to go the 'Iron Front: Liberation 1944' route and have a stand-alone game using the Arma 3 engine licence.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,728 ✭✭✭dazftw

If this game goes to arma 3 im going to be upset.. Mainly because I'm going end up spending more money to keep playing it :D

I spent the last 4 hours playing with a little under 50 blood. I started somewhere in the wilderness and almost immediately got spotted by a pack of zeds. In my panic I ran straight past another player, thinking hey, he has a shotgun, he'll slow them down. Alas, he didn't draw all of them away from me so I had to keep running. Found a radio tower and ran up, looking to delay the inevitable. The zombie stayed down below for whatever reason. But then the player from before emerged from the woods trailing more zombies than I'd left him with, and he legged it up to crouch beside me. And one of his zombies DID start climbing. I watched the other guy line up the shotgun with where the zombie would pop his head up, and *click*. Nothing. Absolutely terrified. Then for some daft reason the zombie climbed all the way down again. I though screw this, I'll take my chances, and legged it. Managed to lose most of them in the woods, and then the last one died chasing me down a steep incline. I was lost, though. Turns out Chernarus is a pretty big place.

I struck out in a random direction, and almost immediately a military-type zombie just appeared out of nowhere and tore into me. Ran like hell for another 5 minutes, losing blood all the time. Remembering the steep hill trick, I kept running until I found a hill, ran all the way up, ran back down, and hey, same thing happened, one dead zombie. Managed to stop the bleeding at 46 blood. Absolutely lost, hungry, thirsty, fainting every couple of minutes, no weapons, nothing. I happened across a deerstand with a half dozen gribblies around it, and somehow managed to sneak up the ladder, to find a beautiful (When you've played for an hour with no weapons, even a crowbar will look good) M16 and 3 clips.

I eventually found a village, and figured I might try to sneak in and find some food and water, when the zombies went nuts, turns out someone was already in there, which worked out great as a distraction. Sneak in, no food, but I did find the room where my distraction made his last stand. Map, watch, hunting knife, water bottle, giant backpack. Boom, I was in business again, as long as I didn't get spotted. Of course, I got spotted on the way out by one of those hopping chaps. One hit probably would have killed me, so I had to risk firing. M16 is rather a bit quieter than the Lee Enfield, I must say. It still drew a couple of zombies, but slowly enough that I could take them out. And hooray, one of them had a tin of pasta. 250 blood! The landscape was now more sepia tone than complete grayscale! Happy days!

Had a look at the sign, compared to map, realised I was in Kamenka, not terribly far from Chernogorsk, although with the low blood I'd pass out maybe 20 times between here and there. I decided to make the trek, if I stuck to the treeline I'd probably be ok. Passing Balota Airstrip, I was spotted by another hopper from a mile away (How the hell do they do that?), and he managed to take a swing at me before I put him down. Bleeding again, I bandaged myself up at 46 blood. And promptly passed out 3 times in a row. Lovely.

Finally sow Cherno over the hill, and was all set to run across a field when I saw a tent cunningly hidden in a large bush. I was terrified. I had some nice enough gear at this stage and I'd made it halfway across the map with next to no blood, I didn't wat to get popped by a human. Luckily the owner was out for the day. Even luckier, there was a tin of sardines in his tent. Om nom nom (I won't shoot someone in cold blood, but hey, if they leave food lying around it's fair game). Maybe I'd make it the rest of the way without fainting. Halfway across the field I saw a boar and a sheep. Remembering a fireplace nearby, I went for it. 8 lovely steaks later, I could see in colour again!

Now I'm back around Cherno with 6000 blood, all the bandages and painkillers I could possibly want, and a gun that won't alert the whole damn island. Fantastic session, that was, Just barely surviving until the last hour. Totally worth it.

Interesting FOV adjustment Guide, someone was looking for this earlier.
saw it here Going to give this a go myself.
Would this account for cheating/bending the rules on my part?
ArmA2 uses a "vertical FoV" system, like Bad Company 2, which puts an additional hurdle in the process of adjusting your FoV. In addition, it uses radians! So, here's what you do:
    1) Go to My Documents/ArmA 2/ and open up USERNAME.ArmA2OAProfile in notepad. Scroll to the very bottom and you'll see two values, fovTop and fovLeft.
    2) Calculate what vertical FoV corresponds to your desired horizontal FoV using this calculator. Make sure the "resolution" information is correct!
    3) Take that number, go to Google, and search "X degrees in radians" to convert it. It should be a small number, between .5 and 1.5 in all likelihood. Round it off at the hundredths - I hear ArmA will chop off any digits after that anyway.
    4) Enter that value as fovTop in notepad.
    5) Using a calculator, divide that number by the second number in your aspect ratio - in my case, 16:10, so I divide it by 10. Then multiply it by the first number, in my case 16. Now enter that number for fovLeft, and round it the same way (leaving only 2 digits after the decimal point).
Boom! Load up ArmA 2 and witness how much more you can see. I also encourage you to bind a thumb button to the Freelook command, as it also helps with situational awareness. I'm a stickler for Hardcore servers, but many of my friends couldn't bear the lack of third person until I walked them through this. Now they feel totally aware of their surroundings, and we don't have to worry about campers using 3rd person to look around/over cover.

    To see how it looks.

    Looks like another broken patch.

    Flashy "Waiting for Host" screen.

Don't suppose anyone has a download for the last working patch files.

Boards server seems to have reverted.

Definetly nothing wrong with changing fov this way. lets you have a slightly wider view but also means your zoom doesnt zoom in as much same goes for normal sight. Which could be a deal breaker when it comes to spotting other players and vehicles in the distance. Have being playing with the wider fov fit for my monitor for the last week and not sure if i will be sticking with it now. Havent really needed the extra few milimetres fov but definetly needed the little extra zoom in my weeks travels. Would have made spotting some tents and players a little easier.

Version 1.7.2.3 available now - initial feedback seems to say that it is more stable than previous but it's hard to find a server as it's just been released and many servers haven't updated to it.

    DO NOT USE IT."

Can't people just not update their dayz version until they know that it works? It saves a lot of hassle to wait for a couple of days to update.
