But with the backing of the Raspberry Pi foundation (some of whom work for ARM). It's not the same as some unbranded piece of kit trying to break into the market.

edit: Though I do think there is room for a better piece of kit at a similar price point.

The Gooseberry could be a contender?

Yeah, I saw that elsewhere. Nice specs. No hardware video (currently) though = deal breaker for me. (edit: looks like that has been resolved. Very nice hardware for the money now tbh. Much closer to a useful PC than the pi)

I've been trying to install some images Fedora and Darkelec to my microSD card on my Mint 13 laptop but when I put it in the card reader in the SD adapter it's always read only.

    Here's some terminal output:
    df -h
    df: `/root/.gvfs': Permission denied

    /dev/sda1 229G 50G 168G 23% /

    ls -l in /media/SD gives:
    drwx------

Not sure why it's saying write protect is on, the microSD doesn't have a lock switch and the adapter one is not set to lock...
I even blew in the card reader slot and tried putting some tape over the notch on the adapter (this results in "Write Protect is off" in the terminal, but the card is still read only)

Edit: I opened nautilus as root and was able to create files on it then, I'll give it another go.

It's probably a group permissions thing. Your user will need to be added to some group or other. You can probably do it through the user editor gui.

Something like the following devices are becoming more attractive to me than the like of the R-Pi, even though they are much more costly .....

I think my days of constructing things from components are at an end :D Pre-built, finished products that are capable of using free & open software, are more attractive to me now ;)

I found a really tiny and cheap Wifi dongle if anyone is looking for one (eBay seller in Hong Kong)

Update on these (0bda:8176 RTL8188CUS Realtek Semiconductor Corp. 802.11n WLAN), they don't work straight out of the box, but there's an awesome script that sets them up if you connect the pi to your router and ssh in, from here.

You can read it all if you like but real quick, ssh into your pi and as root:
    wget http://dl.dropbox.com/u/80256631/install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh

    chmod +x install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh

    ./install-rtl8188cus-latest.sh

and follow the instructions on screen (pressing Y mostly!)

There's a way to put the files on the SD card first and run the script too but I just connected it up and it downloads the files needed anyway! :)

Would you believe putting a bit of feckin' sticky tape over the SD adapter notch on the right made it work, ha! :pac:

So I have my Wireless Pi running with Debian and XFCE, it's hella slow but it's a start, perhaps some sort of minimal build would be better, I don't see myself using LXDE at all (it's ugly), I followed this thread for installing XFCE but it installs it in addition to LXDE using a login manager (SLiM)

new image, promises performance boost :-D
    Raspbian-based SD card image released
Posted on July 18, 2012 by eben
We are pleased to announce the release of our first SD card image based on the Raspbian distribution. This is the result of an enormous amount of hard work by Alex and Dom over the past couple of months, and replaces the existing Debian squeeze image as our recommended install. Notably, it is the first official image to take full advantage of the Raspberry Pi’s floating point hardware for, amongst other things, much faster web browsing.

connected my pi into my router yesterday, and was able use win7 remote desktop on my laptop to connect to it, just installed xrdp on pi, and boom, job done, saves setting up a monitor and keyboard etc :-p

Just as I get the other Debian image setup! ARGH! Haha.

Going to experiment with removing LXDE, Openbox and SLiM (or is a Desktop Manager necessary?), and try to get XFCE as the default DE.
