First off, congrats to the footballers on getting to the Munster Final. Completely deserved by all accounts. Nice for those lads putting in all that effort to get a nice reward out of it.

Now for the main course this weekend. Most of the money seems to be going on Clare and i cant really see why. Waterford have played division 1 for the last number of years while we were in B division and the Clare team will most likely have players with very little championship experience.

I'm hearing the team is along the lines of:
    P. Kelly
    Donovan Dillon Cooney
    Bugler J.Mac O'Connor
    O'Connell Donnellan
    Conlon Lynch Clancy
    McGrath Ryan Cunningham.

A lot of talk about Markham for O'Connor, Glynn for Cooney and that Tony Kelly will be on the bench.
Sean collins is out with hamstring apparently and Cunningham will start.

Say it will be a very close game with us coming out on top by 2 or 3 points.

You can't see why the money is on Waterford, but you still reckon Clare will win? :D

You'd be crazy top back Waterford as favourites. We're not a team you'd write off, but I'd be just as reluctant to back us.

Lot of negativity around the hurlerls at the moment, and the squad is a small bit depleted though I do think that has been very much so over-stated by people who are really just losing the plot. This is going to be a tough game for us, and I expect a goos Clare performance, better than anything we've faced in the first round of Munster in the last few years.

This will mean we'll need to find a performance greater than anything we've shown in the first game in Munster in the last few years. To be honest, having controlled the first half last year Limerick should have beaten us in the end. We beat a poor enough Clare team in 2010, but not convincingly. This won't be good enough Sunday.

I am impressed with the physical size of our players this year, but we've been physically strong the last few years. We've lacked some pace and the crisp, sharp hurling we were associated with under Justin Mc, and that's a big change needed in Waterford if we're to amount to anything this year.

I think for us it will comed down to the quality of the ball played into the full forward line becaue they have a lot of scoring potential. Quality ball, however, was scarce in the league.

As for Clare, well there's more experience there this year with most of the young players having experienced a few championship outings. I like the look of that full forward line, McGrath is an excellent player and Cunningham is also very fast and well able to take his scorers. Colin Ryan might not have the same speed, but he has the hurling and doesn't need that speed playing full forward.

The midfield battle is crucial because I think both half forward lines are in and out. Maurice Shanahan had a good league for Waterford and hopefully he'll go well, but Seamus Prendergast had been dropped by the end of the league and it looks like he'll be back in now, plus nobody is really sure how Eoin Kelly will do. I rate John Conlon highly, but I don't know how much aerial ability is in that half forward line given he's not massive and Clancy is also quite small. It will be a sign that Brick is on the wane is he has any problems with Quinn because I don't rate him.

Nick O Connell is a good hurler, does he have the legs for midfield? And Donnellan is a newcomer ot the midfield berth, yes? Very hard to know how this will pan out because I'm not even sure who'll play there for Waterford, could be any combination of 5 players. Hoping Moran and Molumphy will be there. Moran is an all-rounder and great going forward, and Molumphy will run all day and get on a lot of ball. Also, worth noting he scored 0-3 points in 2010. A contribution like that on Sunday would be invaluable (but very unexpected, and not essential hopefully).

It's gonna be close though. Really, I couldn't make a confident call on this.

You'd be able to get into most rugby and soccer matches, you'd also get a round of golf in a lot of courses. IMVHO, the GAA shouldn't be looking at other sports, rather they should be looking at the entertainment value for their events. If Mrs. Clareman and I was to go to the game it would cost close to €100 for a couple of hours entertainment, that would be 2x€30 tickets, €5 for a program, €10 for misc. drinks/food and €30 for petrol to and from Ennis (260km round trip), for the same €100 I could get a couple of nights away
Just logged on to reply to henno30 but in fairness clareman you summed up exactly what I was going to say perfectly. I love my county but in fairness I think the time has come to let the gaa know that maybe they should start to think outside the box. The limerick -tipp match was also thirty euro but the excuse given there was that there was a double header (Kerry-tipp football). I would have thought that maybe 20€ for the stand and, say, 12 or 13 for the terrace would have been seen as very reasonable given the current financial situation that most people find themselves in these days and would have put the gaa as a whole in a positive light, instead of now hearing the age old diatribe of the 'Grab All Association' reverberating around the place. Anyway that's just my opinion....thanks for your post too...

Clare were unlucky but have serious potential.
Nicki O Connell missed some vital frees which really hurt them in the end. The penalty wasnt a penalty. Clare could have won it. You could really tell Davy Fitz has focused ridiculously on fitness. A force to be reckoned with in the qualifiers.
Conlon and Conor McGrath were immense.

...and I lost a fiver. Sad times.

Great to see Darach Honan back in a Clare jersey. Pity the ball wouldn't come up for him at the end, bit more match sharpness and I have no doubt he could have Easily buried it.

Agreed, he hasn't played for Clare competitively all year, otherwise you could have put your house on him scoring.

Hard luck to Clare, could have won it just as easy as losing. Still astonished the ref gave that penalty.

I expected that ye'd create more goal chances than ye did, Conlon took his excellently. A joy to watch Conor McGrath at times, but he was well marshalled. Cian Dillon is a fantastic hurler as well.

Ye'll be a tough team for whoever draws ye next.

Lads, was listening to the game on the radio and they mentioned something about Kilmurray defenders not being available - whats the story with that??

Christ the referee seems determined to help Cork win as easily as possible. Any slight contact made on a Cork player seems to be a free.

There was definitely two or three frees in around the 21 he should have given Clare - and there was a shoulder on a Cork player that was given as a free??? Made no sense

In the Gaelic Grounds, the cameras on the Mackey Stand side of the field which is generally always the first to fill up. The uncovered stand holds about 7,000 while the overall capacity is about 50,000.

I don't know what the attendance was but it wasn't as empty as it looked.

    I'd guess about 20,000 maybe.

EDIT: I'm hearing it was only half that...well the Mackey must have been empty too :P

I doubt that, it looks far bigger than that, maybe 12-15000.

I reckon Clare will have a right cut off whoever thet play next.

Just back from the match, the ref didn't do us any favours. Clare were completely dominated at midfield and half back line, you could also see difference between Division 1 and 4 footballers, Cork were more clinical in everything they did.

Very surprised that there isnt much chat on the hurling from Sat or is everyone still dying after it! Great match, great to have the passion back in the terraces instead of a sense of consternation.

We were like a dog with a bone that wouldnt let go in the second half!
Some great displays from the likes of Bugler who gets a lot of grief, he was immense.
Tony Kelly as savage for a fella making his debut, dispite the poor celebration! :D
Donnellan played some great ball in the second half, as did Donovan.
Conlon was a very impressive and Collins was everywhere!

Great game Saturday evening, I thought Buglar had a great game. IMVHO the turning point in the game was the sending off, being a man down meant that Clare no longer just played short passes here and there but let the ball into the forwards quickly.

I thought it was great to have some leaders show up at last as well, for too long have we being lacking leadership in the pitch, Limerick next Saturday is going to be a big ask, a quick turn around against a team we've beaten twice this year already.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭billo.d86

Ya the sending off and change of tactics was the difference, we gave away a lot of ball with the sort passing was infuriating at times in the first half.

But other than us gifting Dublin possession they didnt threaten meaningfully, frees mostly(a lot of soft ones at that, or was it only me?)

Ya will be a big ask, but came through with only one injury, Cooney, who hasnt been on top form for a while now.

Should be an electric atmosphere on Saturday.

Just off to the phone to someone there, looks like we could be heading down to Killarney on Saturday evening

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 158 ✭✭billo.d86

Thats strange, wouldnt you think it would be either Cusack Park or the Gaelic Grounds, keep it local! :D Bigger crowds and all that like!

The safety crowd put a limit of 12,000 on Cusack Park which would not be able to hold the match, i reckon, without collapsing :p
And Clare have said no to the Gaelic Grounds. Which is rather disappointing tbh. The easiest option for everyone I would have thought.
The GAA should have known though that it'd have been more than likely a double header in Thurles for the phase 3 qualifier matches, weeks in advance. Before scheduling the football match there.

Killarney, gah. So out of the way. Portlaoise, with the motorway all the way up would be even easier. Not saying that the GAA should do this. But Killarney is just awkward when it could be held somewhere so much more accesible :(

Agreed ShamboBuc, I was under the impression it held 12,000 aswell, not sure where I heard that but it definitly the figure bandied about when it was opened first.
