in one of the articles it says "a salary of up to a maximum of 23000 per year" im assuming the only way to increase this is via promotion?

I am hoping that it is a starting salary of 18k whilst in training rising to approx 23k upon completion of training when I spoke to recruitment they were unable to confirm - they did state time spent at Millilse was approx 6 weeks- 67j

    A very interesting link

    http://www.niassembly.gov.uk/Assembly-Business/Official-Report/Committee-Minutes-of-Evidence/April-2012/Northern-Ireland-Prison-Service-Exit-Scheme-Prison-Officers-Association/

about half way down it talks about how many applied and likely salary - certainly isnt as good as the old pay scale.

    What do yous think

Further info..... Of the ~900 people who made it to the AC there were 561 who passed.

Who knows how many will be taken in from this list.

The above link had interesting reading.

This is the crucial bit of the above meeting.....

    ####################################################

Mr Wells: Sorry. There were 5,000 applications. Does that level not indicate that those people were obviously aware of the package when they applied? Does that not indicate that the package was attractive to a lot of folk? I accept that, compared to what the outgoing officers were on, it is considerably lower. However, 5,000 people felt that it was a good package and were very happy to apply.

Mr F Spratt: You are very lucky, Mr Wells, that you are not on the unemployment register. Today, people would queue up for any job that would pay £150 a week. That is not the problem. The problem will come when people come into this job. I have no doubt that that number will include a lot of well-educated young people who have nothing else to do, having come out of university with degrees and one thing and another. They are going to get a rude awakening when they come into the Prison Service. That is the point that I am making. This is being done by an outside agency. There is no interview process; it is an aptitude test and all that. Yes, 4,900-odd people were interested, but that is because there is no other work out there. There is just no other work — end of story. A lot of the young people who are applying will be using the Prison Service as a stopgap. The Prison Service will reap the benefit of that in years to come. I will probably not be around, but, in my view, that is what will happen.

Mr Wells: Given normal promotion, how long would it take one of those 5,000 people, if appointed, to get up to the level they would have been at had they been on the old prison officer scale?

Mr F Spratt: We had two scales: one of £31,000 and the old one of £38,000. These young officers will never get to that. The maximum pay in their scale, if they get to an offender supervisor position, is going to be £27,000. To then get to a senior officer position might get them another couple of thousand pounds extra, and that will take them anything up to maybe 15 or 17 years. There are no promotion prospects in the Northern Ireland Prison Service. The SEE programme has done away with that.

Mr Wells: So, they will never get to £38,000, no matter what happens?

Mr F Spratt: No, never. It is not going to happen.

Worth noting the pay scales for PO in the Republic have also changed radically - ther have been reports on this forum of trainee PO's dropping out of training when they realise how low the pay is in comparison to their expectations.

Prison costs in Norn Iron have historically been way above the rest of the UK ( even allowing for the costs of the ' Troubles ' ) - these reforms are intended to drive down the costs.

All I have ever wanted to do is work for Prison Service, no matter what the salary is.Obviously the higher the better but it isn't the thing that drives me on..After working in a job for 8 years that I have no passion for I cannot wait to get started.it was torture not getting through the last 4 or 5 recruitment drives.

Would be interested to hear what is so appealing to you about the job - the whole recruitment campaign has been very vague - I have my reasons for applying and hopefully getting a merit score of less than 30 I am in with a good shout - if you want to shoot me a PM (if you prefer) would appreciate it

I'm interested in the reasons too.

I've wanted to be in the Prison Service for quite some too but not with the same enthusiasm as yourself.

Anyone still not received the link? I sent my info away just over a week ago but still haven't had anything back, am starting to panic that there is a problem! I tried emailing to ask if they received everything but no reply and I don't want to hound them by ringing.

Is anybody in the same boat at all or has everyone else received their link?

If anyone hasn't received vetting forms dont panic.
I went through vetting medical etc in the past psni drive and I wasnt particularly high up the merit list.
Got the small envelope right enough for nips a couple of weeks ago and heard nothing since so back to porridge I suppose.
