Is nothing sacred in this country anymore?

A national monument that is said to have served as the coronation stone for the High Kings of Tara has been vandalised, it was revealed today.

Minister for Heritage Jimmy Deenihan condemned the attack on the Lia Fáil (stone of destiny) Standing Stone, which is situated on the Hill of Tara in Co Meath.

The standing stone, which is believed to date from 3,500BC, is considered an extremely important national monument and features extensively in ancient texts. The granite stone is associated with the inauguration rites for the Kings of Tara and was moved to its current position in the early 19th century.

The monument was reported to be damaged last weekend, but it is unknown when the attack occurred.

An archaeologist from the National Monuments Service examined the monument this week and concluded it had been struck – possibly with a hammer or similar instrument – at 11 places on all four faces of the stone. Fragments of the standing stone were also removed.

A report has been sent to the Garda.

Speaking today, Mr Deenihan said the national monuments at Tara, which include the standing stone, are nationally and internationally renowned.

"These monuments are a fundamental part of our shared heritage and history, and I condemn in the strongest terms the damage that has been caused to this monument," he said.

"I would ask all people to respect and appreciate the importance of our national monuments, and to keep a watchful eye on any in their locality."

Another report said the 11 marks on the monument were made with what looks like a hammer, which means the culprit would had to have carried the hammer up to the monument with intent to disfigure it.
The mind boggles. It's only there around 5,500 years untouched:mad:

If they are caught they'll get a telling off and be let out to do whatever they want again.

Go to a court on any day and you'll hear how the defendants have 40,50,60+ previous convictions and yet they're still on the streets and yet again they get a €2 fine and told not to be bold.

In addition to the damage they have caused, this will likely ruin it all for the rest of us law-abiding visitors.

This may lead to OPW denying public access to the stone.

Pretty sad situation nonetheless.

that seems to be the opw solution to everything shut it down
they have no interest whatsoever in maintaining or protecting anything

How would they fund security 24/7 for this site?

The problem is not the OPW, the problem is the amount of scumbags in this little country of ours. Too many spoiled little bastards brought up by parents who were more interested in spending Celtic Tiger credit on big fridges, extensions and foreign holidays than raising their little darlings to be good people.

true maybe the big fridges should be put over the monuments and fitted with vandal proof glass so people could still get to see them

on a more serious note their are a huge number of unemployed people who would only love the job of ensuring our national monuments were kept safe and maintained and they wouldnt cost the state a whole lot more than what the are paid on benefits

Too true.

We used to have a society that didn't have major problems in leaving citizens to their own good senses in protecting their heritage.

Now, unfortunately, the only way to protect these invaluable relics are to lock them up in museums with near-maximum security, or to prevent direct access to them in situ using barricades and cages.

That's the bit that really gets me! :mad:

It's only this year that I walked around the Hill of Tara and loved it - it depresses me that such low life individual(s) would get a kick out of such wanton destruction - now the Save Tara group have an actual threat to Tara itself to focus on, now that the M3 is built and there to stay.
