    Hi everyone,
I have a sat nav since 2009 and i was looking to update the maps on it.
I lost the USB cable for it so I went into Harvey Norman yesterday to buy a new one.
the salesman said that its better to buy a micro sd card, download the maps onto tat on my laptop and transfer them to the sat nav.
so I brought tat for 9.99. I logged on to garmin and brought nüMaps Onetime™ City Navigator® Europe NT 2013. But when I went to download it the laptop was looking for a Usb cable, there was no option as far as i could see to download it on to a card.
could anyone advbise me pleases to where i went wrong or do i need to buy a usb cable. i am not really technical savvy.
    Cheers.

    Hi,

I was just about to reply to you on the other thread

I never tried to install a Garmin map update directly to SD card as thankfully space is not an issue for me yet, even with full CN Europe and CN NA maps on the same unit. Space may be a concern for you to get that full update to fit in internal memory on an older unit though. A good reason in itself to get your hands on a USB cable so that you can check this and delete superfluous files or backup important ones. A cable is a must. SD cards I believe have to be formatted as fat32.

I would say that it is highly unlikely that it is possible to download, install and unlock a Garmin map to an SD card without ever connecting your device to your PC. I'd say wishful thinking by that salesman, but I stand corrected.

Came across this interesting link to update directly to card....
    http://www.poi-factory.com/node/34914

but again a cable is required to transfer files to/from device.

If this seems too much one can of course download the update to the computer and then install the map or regions you want to device/SD card if it does not happen automatically. I believe Garmin installs a program called Mapinstall for this purpose with the download. Mapsource is another program that will do the same.
Unfortunately updating a Garmin map via download is way more complex than it should be. Much easier by DVD / preinstalled SD card for a Onetime update.

Did you not have the option of getting nuMaps Lifetime as I believe its only $20 dearer than Onetime update.?

thanks for tat advice. I think the easiest option is to go and buy a usb cable. my sat nav is a nuvi 255.

To install the update you must have a mygarmin.com account and a means of connecting your satnav to the internet, which means that you must have a usb cable. There is no way of avoiding this.

Whether you can install from a sd card is another issue. You can install TO an sd card in the satvav from a computer that is logged into your mygarmin account, which is why you need a usb cable.

Why bother with the sd card in the first place ... get a refund from hn.
