I think The Wire is like an American version of The Riordans or something.

I can understand somebody having an opinion on it however an informed academic critical view of it is completely different. In terms of what the show has accomplished no tv show has came close.

You realise basically every TV show has that kind of stuff put out about it yes? From Star Wars, Harry Potter, The Simpsons, Lost etc? Just last night I was in the local library flicking through a book on the tv show House as it happens, exploring the philosophy of House. An in-law of mine has even had unofficial lectures using cases used in House episodes while studying medicine. Therefore it must be a masterpiece... actually I still find it decidedly average as tv entertainment.

My own personal favourite is Star Wars as it happens with references to fascism etc, but let's face it the actual films are still pretty crap. It doesn't make them a masterpiece.

For me the 1970's daleks in the Tom Baker Dr Who era were the bomb re Nazis in sci fi.

Anyhoo.. One thing I see trotted out regularly enough is that TV was better in the old days/they don't make em like that anymore etc. I say bollocks. IMHO TV serials are better today on average. It's just they're spread thinner over more channels.

Every Man Utd supporter I know are such sore losers. They spout ****e to all and sundry when they win but if you slag them back when they lose they get so thick. If you cant take it then shut the fcuk up. The pain on their faces when City clinched it was priceless :D

Yep, my unpopular opinion is that I loved the Wire as well.

I do suspect a lot of people say they love the Wire in order to feel intellectually superior.

I completely understand why people wouldn't like it though. It's not instantly entertaining, and I can honestly say it took me until halfway through the 3rd series before I began to recognise the intricate web of characters they built up. From that point on it's an absolute treasure to watch.

(Provided you use Wikipedia to fill you in on what's you missed!)

Couldn't agree more, takes a good while to cop who's who and what's going on. Well worth sticking with it though. It's a genuine masterpiece!!

My controversial recomendation for tv masterpiece however is Angel. Yes there was vampires and monsters and so on but if you look past that, it was extremely cleverly put together and, like the wire, captured the boundary between right and wrong perfectly. Some times the good guys are every bit as evil the bad ones!

Oh thats definitely the case. TV had no Game of Throne, Sopranos, Wire etc. two decades ago. What we think we like in the A-team is nostalgia. It was bubble gum, in comparison.

You had House of Cards, Cracker, Yes Minister and plenty more. I'd say American TV has upped quality wise while the BBC can still make excellent drama.

True K, but production values are much higher these days for a start. Every generation has good TV going way back, but this "ahh the golden era of TV" stuff doesn't quite fly with me.

20 years time there'll be some saying the same. I wouldn't watch much of the American stuff but BBC can still some excellent stuff and probably with smaller budgets.

I think it has moved on W. I doubt you'll ever see a House of Cards or a Tinker,Tailor, Soldier, Spy again. Political intrique is just too slow these days, you need a Thick of it, some satire thrown in, otherwise the audience loses interest.

They made Tinker Tailor for cinema, got critical acclaim, but the masses didn't get it. Kind of sums it up. I remember seeing the Constant Gardener in the cinema from the same author, it took the birth of the mixed race baby to get the audience to take notice, it has to be spelled out. Something striking has to happen, something visual.

In our day :D, suppose we didn't have facebook, youtube etc. Sherlock and Luther are examples of marrying both.

Whilst being willing to accept the idea of civil partnership, I do not believe in such a thing as "gay marriage". To me, it's an oxymoron. Marriage is the union of a woman and man.

repeating what it currently means has no bearing on anything
that's kind of the point of trying to change things

"Nothing is so constant as change." But unfortunately not all change is good. To paraphrase GK Chesterton, before you knock down a fence you need to find out why it was put up in the first place.

That's true when it comes to fences, not so much marriage. 2 gay men or 2 gay women getting married doesn't effect 2 straight people in any way. It's not like the love of your life is going to suddenly turn gay and marry just because it's legal.
If you don't support gay marriage, don't get gay married!

True and it needs to be so fast paced too and the story has to happen within one episode for the most part. A mini movie that could stand on its own. Where once you had episodes, now you have story arcs.

Having a sex change operation does not magically make you a woman, you're a man with his mickey cut off.

Well, instead of fences, think pillars - as in pillars of society. For me, marriage between a man and a woman is a pillar of society. Knock it down and put up another one saying marriage is whatever you're having yourself and you've got a weaker society.
It's (as the thread says) an unpopular opinion but it doesn't necessarily make it wrong. :D

You're right, an unpopular opinion doesn't make it wrong. A stupid one with absoultly nothing to support it except this is what you've decided in your head is wrong.
And your idea that gay marriage weakens society is just that.

If marriage is a pillar of society, then we're pretty fecked tbh considering the amount of marriages that end in divorce.

If John and Jim in Galway want to get married or Mary and Ann in Cork want to, let them! What difference does it make to any of our lives?

I'd suggest you do some research on marriage and the family unit in Europe over the last thousand years. You're in for a bit of a shock.
