As long as you stick with either of those 2 you wont go far wrong.
You can compare TomTom devices here:
    http://www.tomtom.com/en_ie/products/car-navigation/index.jsp
    And Garmin devices here:
    http://www.garmin.com/uk/products/in-car-sat-navs/

Other than that the main differences are TomTom has live services
    Traffic
    Search
    Weather etc.
TomTom now uses Go Codes for Ireland

Garmin has free RDS Traffic & uses Loc8 codes.

    Happy shopping ;)

An excellent and impartial answer KoolKid. I've never used a TomTom so I've a couple of questions .....

In the past, Garmin was always better when it came to the mapping of minor rural roads. What's the present day situation ... have TomTom caught up?

Do TomTom have an equivalent to the Garmin €70* Lifetime map update subscription?

    *approx

    Hi Eirman,
TT are getting map corrections updated much quicker these days. I have had some corrections sorted on the next map released . That's under 3 months.
There have been a lot of corrections in the last few releases 880,885 & 890.
specially your minor roads & estates.
If there's anywhere you wan't me to check for you let me know.
There is no lifetime map update subscription, but their map update service do allow it to transfer to another device.

So, with TomTom you have to pay for every map update separately, i.e. there's no map update subscription service at all?

There is an map update service that around €70. It gives you the latest map & the next 4 updates . That would be 1 year of updates or 4 new maps.

Hmm, that's pretty pricey when you compare it to Garmin then.

It depends how you look at it. Each new map of Europe would cost around €70 anyway. A new Garmin map of Europe is around €95.
4 maps for €70 I would pay for.
Don't get me wrong the Garmin lifetime is good also but its matched to your device only. Tom Toms is matched to an account.

Garmin is the outright winner when it comes to map update prices.

I have been using my garmin lifetime sub to keep my Nuvi760 updated for about 4 years now. If the Nuvi aint nicked and continues to function for another four years that will work out at less than €10 per annum (about 3 updates per annum).

The €10 p.a. is based on the €95 I paid at the time, but you can get it much cheaper now.
