Consequences of low HDD space

I was just wondering what the consequences of having extremely low space of a MacBook HDD are.

My MacBook is from mid-2007 and still runs very well and is in great shape, except for the fact that I have 602.9MB of space left. I don't have any games installed, no large applications, no movie files or other large files that I'd use.

It is mainly photos and music I guess. I've also used Disk Inventory X to find and delete items I don't need. I will be getting a new Mac sometime this year but am curious what risks I have from running with such low space.

There's just a higher risk that you lose more information if it was to be corrupted. someone might give a more technical answer :P

Kernel panic. Essentially the OS runs out of space to modify and swop system files and the system hangs.
Can in some cases lead to irreversible OS corruption requiring a complete re-install.

<5GB is very risky territory to be in, <1GB is bordering dangerous.

Have you an external drive or something you can temporarily shift some stuff over to in order to free up space?

I will move some stuff onto my Time Machine. That should buy me some time.
