funny people dismissing o'neill and bigging up avb, for me those two are alot closer than some here want to believe, avb won a weaker league, o'neill won a weaker league, avb won a europa league, o'neil lost a uefa cup final in extra time

As a child of the 70s who grew u during the glory days of the 80's this is a sad day for me.
I think Kenny's appointment and moreso his appointment being made long term were acts of sentiment over reason, while todays announcment is a return to logical reasoned thinking, at least on the face of it. Kenny took a big risk taking on the job; they say never go back and he had a lot more to lose than to gain by returning to the club. His mistakes during this spell are well documented, and i think in the end it showed how much the game has changed in terms of tactics, PR and assosiated Bullsh1t in the last 10 years or so. While to a relative old timer like me it's good to see someone taking on the sh1theads in Sky and many of the hacks in the media, it alienated him and the club and left them isolated when they needed friands during the Suarez thing.
Its a bold step by Fenway, lets hope they have a plan in place to build the club back to where it should be, i.e. the top. but there are no quick fixes anymore.
Finally from myself thanks to KD for everything he has done for he club. He inherited a mess in Jan 2011 and steadied the ship and pointed it back in the right direction. Most importantly, this spell must not overshadow his great legacy both as a player/player-manager and club icon. He led Liverpool to greatness as a player and lifted the club and city with great dignity in the aftermath of Heysel and particularly Hillsborough.
    Long Live the King...YNWA!!

You do realise there is more ways of comparing them yes? I mean I when talking about mangers I'd considered tactical ability and style of play pretty important, and on those issues AVB is light years ahead of MON.

"They need to get everything right" ........those types of comments dont surprise me. Its basically a comment that means "i expect instant gratification", thats whats wrong with football, not whats right with it. Someone tell me what would be the point in this!!!!, sign up AVB?, give him 60 mil? tell him to plan for a future? sign players for a future? and then hand out more p45's like confetti after 12-18 months?. You cant bring in 21 yr olds and expect to hit the ground running.
    .

I don't expect instant gratification but I do expect continual progress. There was no progress this season. Our choice of signings were poor, we failed to put a single run of form together and we had a real problem for the entire season in scoring goals which was never rectified. I never felt like things 'clicked' this season for more than a game or two.

So, as I said, I don't expect instant gratification once I feel we are moving in the right direction. For example, when Rafa was manager I felt there was continual progress each season and there was a very clear direction.

This is a sad day for this club. Kenny should have got 1 more year. This kind of fast and loose behaviour with a manager makes us just like the rest of those clubs we detest.

Too late, after the way Hodgson was treated.

Have to say I feel sorry for Kenny. I would of given him another year personally, but he is still and always will be a legend.

Moving on (or backwards) only one man should get the job and thats Rafa. Under stable owners and money to invest, it could be something very special. It baffles me how many Liverpool fans disregard all he did for us. When they say his brand of football was terrible....ermmm we were hammering teams constantly. We were a force in Europe and extremely hard beat. Ive said this before but what we know went on with Rafa and Hicks/Gillette is probably only half of it.

Rafa is a manager who can work with poorish sides and create a solid hard to beat team. Just look what he built from the 05 team to the 08/09 team. Best football I ever witnessed as a Liverpool fan and we should of won the league that year.

If we go with AVB it would be a gamble and one that would need serious investment. Hes a manager that builds fast flowing attacking teams, something we are lacking in bucket loads at the minute. He would need at least three years to build his own side and some solid financial backing.

Martinez/Lambert/Rodgers - decent managers but no way are they ready for a club like Liverpool.

    O'Neil can **** off.

In these times of austerity I would urge those of you rushing out to put your money on Rafa Benitez to think again.

That is as clear he can be i guess. Disappointed but i hope that means we are looking at someone above Rodgers/Martinez quality. And more importantly, stand a chance of getting them.

I reckon FSG want to spend a decent amount of money on players this summer, and they would not let Kenny be the one to spend it.

Lads, Kenny had to go. While he is a legend and he did leave us in a better position than that fool of an England manger, I think he struggled to adapt to today's game. Would love to see Mourinho or Guardiola take a crack at the job. Both candidates have a pedigree at a high level to get this club winning things.

I suppose its interesting that Dalglish was sacked, he clearly did not understand that he was on very thin ice -or if I'm being cynical he knew he could get a pay off for not walking, but I doubt that was his thinking I really reckon he thought he was safe.

Doing the right thing by the club comes second obviously when there's a big pay off at stake.

It was a necessary sacking. Most of the blinkered fools on here won't admit it, but Dalglish actually set the club back a couple of seasons. £100M spent and we're in a worse position than when he took over.

Duncan Jenkins the fella who got our teamsheet right every week? If so I hope he's right on this regard. AVB over Matinez every day of the week.

And just for Gerty : Luís André de Pina Cabral e Villas-Boas over Roberto Martínez Montoliú every day of the week :P

If it is AVB then I seriously hope FSG are gunna lay down some serious money to spend. To mould an AVB side team we will need at least five new players who could jump into a first 11.

Tweet from Paul Dalglish suggests it may have been less then amicable

I look up to my Dad as a hero but 32 major trophies count 4 nothing if you have 1 inconsistent league campaign. Still proud to call him Dad!

Anyways lets hope the next 7 days are interesting and a plan is in place

Not the best source (putting it lightly!) but Goal.com are reporting that Martinez has been approached.

Okay this is from some guy who swears its true - BBC radio just read out an e-mail
saying Dalglish wanted Gerrard to take over the reigns after the euros with him moving upstairs. As FSG said no he refused a role upstairs.

    Mad stuff altogether!

Well it's pretty obvious it was never going to be a mutual decision both were happy with.

Have to be for me too but the fans would need to give him time, wonder what he'd make of Carroll and Downing!

I do think it's the right decision, Kenny was going to be under huge pressure to deliver fourth and could have been gone by Xmas if we weren't in fourth or higher.
