    :confused: To me that would suggest 'yerman' is a dolphin rapist...if he exists.

    Without trying to sound too cynical, I have to say Fungi will probably always be in Dingle if ya catch my drift, given his value to the local economy...wouldn't blame 'em of course, but in 20 years time questions (moreso than now) will be asked.

    A fair point, I do think he's the still the same one, but like what are they going to do when he dies? I'd imagine they'll find a way, or they'll try.

    Who knows maybe we'll have Fungi the Blue Whale in the future :rolleyes:

    I always just assumed it was the name given to any auld dolphin that popped up down there. I find it hard to believe that its the same dolphin and he isn't dead yet.

    Only in Ireland would we nearly make a national hero out of a dolphin down in Kerry :pac:

During the winter months he must travel further a field for his nourishment.

    Ithought it was a well known fact that fungi died a couple of years ago and was replaced so the gullible tourists would keep coming. There is always likely to be a fungi in dingle bay

    It's unusual enough that one lone dolphin would decide to hang around all this time and become the local pet (or make the locals into his pets would probably describe it better!). The chances that two in a row would choose to do so are so tiny statistically as not to merit serious consideration.

    Dolphins are highly sociable, and normally live in pods. Lone dolphins who get separated and who settle in one place, substituting socialising with humans for socialising with their podmates, are few and far between.

    While bottlenose dolphins have an average life expectancy of about 25 years, some have been known to live between 40 and 50 years. And it is hardly surprising that Fungi would live above the average span at least: he has a rich feeding ground more or less to himself, and the tidal mouth of the harbour into Dingle Bay proper is especially suitable for his purposes; he spends a lot of his time in a relatively sheltered environment, safe from many of the normal hazards that he might otherwise encounter.

    And I suspect that many of the expert visitors, marine biologists and others, who have visited him regularly over the years (many from abroad) would notice a substitution. His markings and scars have been well documented; in fact, it would be no trouble at all to generate a passport for Fungi! :pac:

    How do you replace a wild animal? They'd need a continuous stock of new ones that they would release at one end of the bay only to watch them swim out to freedom straight away.

    R na Gaeltachta caused panic a few years back for April Fool's day -announced he had gone over to Valentia island to live!!He doesn't jump as high if the boats have been busy in and out, best time to see him really jump is early morning, you can walk out on the path past the Skellig hotel. He is usually to be seen there, just over the hillock at Hussey's folly.

    The original fungi was killed in a boating accident. That's what happens when we swim in front of large vessels. Last I heard, fungi was on his 6th reincarnation.

    I use to work for the Fungi boats and I've heard all the theories about him like nets at the mouth of the harbour, robotic dolphins etc. My favourite one I like to tell people when the ask about him is that we buy a new one off the fleets that supply seaworld every few years.

    And just for those who ponder about Fungi's sexuality, he is not gay, though Dolphins are known to indulge in bisexuality, he frequently has female visits. The theory for why he has remained on his own for so long is that he is a release from a dolphinarium, which began to close all over the UK in the 80's, thus he had no pod and was used to the company of humans. Dingle, a busy harbour with lots of humans and food, was a perfect place to live.

    Bottlenose dolphins in captivity have been known to live up to 60 years, and it is estimated that Fungi is in his late 30's/ early 40's, so hopefully he'll have a few more years :)
