I am doing an 8 week engineering placement and must write up a report.I have been told by some people that they should be 10 pages long and by others 40 pages.

Does anyone here know what length they usually are?

I did a 20 week (PEP) engineering placement back in 2007 and our placement report was ~20pages. I had a look over the emails and here's the outline we were given (but it's probably different now)...

The report incorporates the following work-integrated learning:
    • Information about the company, e.g. location, type of work, employees and departments.
    • Area the student worked in.
    • Summary of project/s completed.
    • Technical/business experience acquired.
    • Achievement of some of the Programme Outcomes:
      • Ethics within the organisation and the IEI code of ethics (1-2 pages)
      • Teamwork within the organisation (1-2 pages)
      • Critical analysis of Learning Outcomes achieved (1-2 pages)

Did mine last year, I wrote about 15 pages for it. The length very depends on how much you have done project-wise while on placement, just try and make out that you have reached all the outcomes mention in ethernet's post.
At the end of the day the P.E.P. placement & report is only worth 1.5 etcs, which is a bit of a joke considering the amount of work involved. I know that one of the Dublin colleges give 10 etcs for it.

Best of luck with final year!
