Hi guys, I picked up the Akura AVT8010 at LIDL recently for 55 euros and it records perfectly (standard definition or High Definition- RTE2 HD) to an external hard drive or memory stick/USB thumb etc...memory must be formatted FAT32 and if using an external hard drive, it must be powered (i.e. plugs into the wall).
Works perfectly. I have several bluray players around the house with USB inputs on the front panel and I can then take my hard drive and watch recordings anywhere I want. Got mine tuned in perfectly to all stations including RTE2 HD using a 700mm single rabbit ears antenna off an old Phillips portable tv. I'm in Santry at quite a height so that probably helps with reception.

Its an Akura, which has already been Saorview approved.Does this having a usb socket mean that you can record to external hdd?

Records perfectly mate, see my previous post.

You can buy a box that has both Saorview (RTE, RTE2 HD, RTE jr., 3e, TG4, RTE ONE +1, RTE Aertel Digital, RTE News Now, 3 etc...) and Freesat (BBC HD, BBC1 HD, ITV HD, Channel4 HD, NHK HD plus dozens of other standard definition channels- over 100)...or you can buy 2 seperate boxes. If you buy the all in one box you will need a satellite dish for Freesat and an antenna (either indoors or outdoors) for Saorview...so 2 seperate cables running into the 1 box. If you buy 2 seperate boxes the set up is the same, except 1 cable into each box from dish (Freesat) and antenna (Saorview). I'm assuming when I say this that you can receive the Saorview and Freesat signals where you live.
I paid I think 50 euros at B&Q 2 years ago for a Ross dish and freesat HD receiver and 55 euros for the Saorview box a few weeks ago. I paid a professional to install the dish tho as it's worth getting that right 1st time so you don't have to mess with it later, and I attached a non powered antenna off an old portable Phillips tv to the Saorview box.
And I would never attach anything to a chimney, dish or antenna- thats asking for trouble.
    Check out these....

Welcome to Boards. I presume you mean the deflector has been turned off. Dublin_1 has given excellent advice in his post. All the non-pay options will involve once-off payments, but everything is free after that.

Since you already have a Satellite dish for the Free to air UK channels, you should not need another one. However if there is only one cable running from it then you should think about replacing the LNB with a 'quad' LNB with 4 cables which you can run to the TV points in the other rooms. This will be easier if you are running the cables from the satellite dish via your attic. You will also need a satellite receiver for each TV (go for a 'combo' saorview box if you don't want separate boxes for UK channels and for Irish channels).

Probably no harm to explain to new members that unless their query is directly related to the thread topic, they should start their own threads rather than hijacking others.

Even Stan 10's problem was a general reception topic, not really anything to do with the Lidl receiver.

    Hi,

I bought the Lidl STB recently.
I bought it primarily to test Saorview in our area (which turns out is excellent) but also to see if the UK Freeview channels could be received and decoded.

Until now under the analogue system we have 2 external Aerials - 1 RTE aerial and 1 aerial directed North receiving BBC NI and UTV etc. Both signals are combined in an indoor amp and distributor to a few rooms.
I'm situated in South West County Dublin so I guess on the fringes of the UK coverage, so reception is patchy at the best of times.

As the Lidl Saorview is Mpeg-4, I was hoping it might be able to decode the UK Freeview (Mpge-2) signal, or at least I would test it's quality.

Using Autoscan, only the Saorview channels were detected and decoded, no sign of UK Freeview channels. I don't know the frequency and channel numbers for UK Freeview so haven't scanned for them manually.

Am I being too optimistic here? Does the Lidl box simply not support Freeview?

The next option will probably involve getting a Combi box (Saorview via Aerial and then install Free-to-Air Satelite).

    Any thoughts?

The receiver will decode standard definition Freeview signals, but not Freeview HD.

You're much too far away from the transmitters in NI to receive the present low powered Freeview transmissions & I seriously doubt you'll ever have anything like reliable Freeview reception, even when it's at full power. Satellite would be your best option for UK channels.

Is channel5 one of your UK analogue stations?

If not you're probably receiving a relay station which won't be broadcasting DTT until after ASO, and even then won't be transmitting the full range of UK DTT channels.

If it is, the cheapest option is to wait until ASO and see what you can then receive. And in the meantime find out what transmitter you're receiving from, and do a manual scan on the UK DTT channels to see if anything shows up.

As previous poster said, best (most reliable) option would be to use satellite, considering the distance involved.

    Thanks for the information lads.

Can't receive Channel 5 which leads me to believe the signal orignates from the North, (with BBC NI and UTV), possibly through a relay as you say.
The aerial for this is quite high, but UK analogue reception has never been great.

I suppose even when ASO happens one can't assume that Digital Freeview will have the same coverage as the old analogue signal, especially on the very fringes like I am.

I think the combi-box is the way to go.

    If not you're probably receiving a relay station . . .

Not necessarily, in the case of Divis/Black Mtn., the C5 analogue signals are considerably lower powered than the other 4 channels & would be non-existent that far south.

If Chaz wants to know where his UK channels are coming from, he can check the UHF channel nos., Divis 1-4 being 31, 27, 24, 21 respectively.

Im picking up Saorview and TV3 and 3E in crystal clear picture and sound on this indoor areal.

    All for 10 euro too.

    wow.
Pretty sweet for ten euro. All one would need is a Soarview box then.

    Are you from Dublin, Paddy147?
and, do you know if lidl will be selling them again anytime soon?

In a strong signal area, a zero euro coathanger would probably do just as well.

    I'm partial to your abracadabra,

I'm raptured by the joy of it all.
