    Hi guys,

My laptop has gone really slow. It's so bad that I can't listen to music/watch a film as the sound keeps lagging.

I would bring my laptop in for repair, but I have a host of college work to do this weekend. Can you guys suggest anything? I ran ccleaner, but that didn't do much

I'm guessing it's a virus, but I could be wrong.

    Thanks in advance

I ran ccleaner, super anti spyware and malwarebytes and no change. I guess I'll have to bring it the professionals.

Check Task manager to see what Process is causing the trouble, right click on taskbar and select Task Manager, then tell us what process is using all memory/cpu

It's definitely a svchost.exe problem. It's pretty much running at 50% all the time. 100% when I boot up.

When I click on services for that SVCHOST.EXE it is linked to:
    wuauserv: Windows update
    winmgmt: Windows Management Instrumentation
    Temes: Themes
    ShellHWDetection: Shell Hardware Detection
    Sessionenv: Remote Desktop Configuration
    SENS: System Event Notification Service
    Schedule: Task Scheduler
    Rasman: Remote Access Connection Manager
    ProfSvc: User profile service
    LanmanServer: Server
    iphlpsvc: IP Helper
IKEEXT: IKE and AuthIP Ipsec Keying Modules
    gpsvc: Group Policy Client
    EapHost: Extensible Authentication Protocol
    CertPropSvc: Certificate Propagation
    Browser: Computer Browser
    BITS: Background Intelligent Transfer Service
    Appinfo: Application info
    AeLookUpSvc: Application Experience

Do all these need to be running?

Go to the Performance tab in Task Manager, then go to View and choose "Show Kernel Times." If a large part of the CPU Usage graph is red, this may indicate that the hard disk is running in PIO mode, which would cause the symptoms you describe.

When I go in to Performance in task manager it doesn't give me that option?

It gives me a bar measuring CPU, A graph type thing on CPU Usage History, a bar measuring Memory, A graph type thing showing physical memory Usage History

    Then at the bottom:
    Pysical Memory
    Total
    Cached
    Available
    Free

    System
    Handles
    Threads Processes
    Up Time
    Commit (MB)

    Kernel Memory (MB)
    Paged
    Nonpaged

And a button for Resource Monitor

Is it not in the View menu at the top when you go to the Performance tab?

Open up Services.msc (Use the start menu) and look for any unusual services running on the computer.

    AHA! I missed that :o

It's about a third red at the lowest.

It's probably not that so. It's more common on XP than Vista or 7.

    I don't if this is the CPU model, but it;s a Genuine Intel(R) CPU U4100 @ 1.30GHz

3 gigs of RAM and 64-bit operating system

svhost @ 100% is generally caused by printing to a non existant printer - ie. printing to the xps printer .
check for any open spool requests and delete them .

delete all printers ? hadthis happen on a few machines where i work (im in it) and it was down to the users printing to the xps printer rather then choosing their actual printer.

If you are using Google Chrome, and have downloaded apps/extensions, they can run in the background and cause significant slowdown in performance.

Open Google Chrome > Click the Spanner Icon on the top right > Tools > Extensions, and disable some of the apps that are running.
