Schengen to be suspended for the ECB summit in Barcelona and 6,500 cops to be deployed

From May 2nd to 4th everybody entering Spain will have to go through a rigorous border control. Furthermore, the measure will start to be implemented a few days in advance as a precautionary measure. From April 28th at earliest morning (12 am) to May 4th at 23h59, the Schengen Protocol will be suspended in Spain.

No doubt the authorities at various points of entry into Spain / Catalonia will have full access to on line digital records of each individual that attempts to enter the country at their disposal. In other words, the EU gave the go ahead for Spain to suspend its open border policy in order to keep out anti EU protesters.

This once again underscores the fact that the European Union is inherently undemocratic in nature and goes to every length to silence the free speech rights of its citizens

Em the open borders are because of the EU in the first place.
The Spanish Government has taken the decision for security reasons, upon the request made by the Catalan Minister for Home Affairs, Felip Puig, in charge of security in Catalonia.

So from your own article it states the closure of the borders is not because of the EU.

I see nothing unusual in this. I travel frequently between Helsinki and Tallinn (both in Schengen countries) and only once in several years have I been asked for ID in either place. That was when they had a NATO meeting in Tallinn and the Estonians suspended Schengen for a while. Having to stand in a queue for a few minutes every now and then may be a bit of a bore, but it sure as hell beats being blown up by a terrorist. Events like EU and NATO summits seem to attract them and it only makes sense to beef up security.:):):)

This doesn't actually restrict any rights though does it? It's security based and fully justifiable, EU citizens will still be allowed enter, they'll just have to go through border control and will still be able to have a protest if they wish.

But if it gets anything like the US or UK where someone could be pulled aside by the authorities and even detained because of some stupid unintentional Facebook or Twitter comment. This is what I would be concerned about and stuff like this is happening all the time.
