I'm going through the angry and hate stage. Unfortunately, she hasn't caught up. :(

Been stressed the last few days for a variety of reasons (exams etc) but honest to God I don't know what I'd do without my teenagers. Myself and the 3 eldest (13, 15 and 17) sat watching several programmes on TV last night and the fun we had!!!

Just silly stuff and joking around but they really make me laugh and I'm so happy, genuinely happy when they are around me:D

Got a letter from my daughters soon to be secondary school regarding school books.

Looks like they are introducing the Ipad for first years, not sure what it entails yet have to go to a meeting next week. Not sure if we have to buy ipad and books or they supply the ipad and we buy the books or we supply the ipad and they buy the books or they supply the ipad and the books....

Will find out next week ....

We already have an ipad 2 but that is used by the family... I got my daughter an expensive laptop at xmas so she could do her projects and stuff on it and now looks like it may be put on the self......

Is anyone elses child at school or starting school and uses or will use an ipad?

Youngest starting in September- all books so far.Hope to recycle number 2's books as she'll be finished Junior cert in June.

Potentially expensive for some families, expecting ipads to be purchased....will be interesting to see the volume of parents at the meeting.
I always find, that the families who can least afford these changes, are always poorily represented at these meetings- they complain privately, but that's about it.

Off to Italy in 2 weeks.... cant wait.

My daughter broke her swimming togs, we went everywhere looking for new ones, dunnes girls section was to childish for her and the adults togs were not great. Tried debenhams and nothing really suited her, explored the Internet and found m and m direct.

They had a roxy bikini on sale 21 euro instead of 60, well it came yesterday and it fits a dream, looks like a nice teen bikini. Its so hard to find bikinis for teen girls.....

Its hard buying stuff of the net though, she has size 4's 6's 8's and 10's i opted for the uk size 6, think i made the right choice.

She is now 5 foot 3.5, 1 inch smaller than me. The taller she gets the more people think she is my sister rather than my daughter, this week alone 3 people have said it too me...

mandmdirect is great, my lads love it.

My older boy will be 17 in September and he passed his driving theory test recently and all he's on about is learning to drive once he's 17. I got a shock at how expensive the insurance is for young males. He's in Transition Year so it'll be a few years before he will be working and able to afford to run his own car.

My daughter is 13 almost 14 and I was looking at these bikinis. I'm unsure of the size cos she'd be a 6 or 8 in clothes. She's 5'3 now. What would you suggest? Going on hols in July.

I would say go for the size:

    S UK6 Roxy 8 Bst 32" Wst 25" Hip 35" Euro 32

my daughter is a 32a, waist 25 and hip 32 and is 5 foot 3, and i got the above size and it fits really really nice i would say the top would fit up to a 32 c. If your daughter has bigger measurements go for the next size up .

this is the one i got for her and it looks way nicer on my daughter than it does on the model.

Our school is doing the same from Sep for 1st years....my daughter will be in TY then and is raging :D but she found out that its only for school use ie the students won't be able to download apps or anything like that.

I think in our school they buy it but rather than pay upfront they will pay in installments over a number of years.

Not sure how much cheaper it works out compared to books - if at all - but it will mean lighter bags and thats great.

If you couldn't afford something that more articulate parents were saying was wonderful for childrens' education would you have the nerve to stand up at a public meeting and say so?
If you did would your children ever forgive you for exposing their poverty?

The only way of finding out what parents really want is a secret ballot, not a show of hands in public.

Just back from iPad meeting at the school, estimated cost to parents 850.00 euro. Needs to have over 80% acceptance rate, our replys are to be in by Friday and if it gets the go ahead they want 420.00 by the end of may to buy the ipad 2 but you can buy your own. We have to get a license off them so we can buy ebooks in June. Ebooks estimated cost 330. They also said to insure the iPad that will cost up to 60euro. A cover for the iPad will cost 40 euro, costs keep creeping up.

I asked whether a teacher can look at the kids iPad and View their personal content and I was told no.

They said the credit union has agreed to give parents a loan to deal with the cost, the books last 3 years and if new ones come out we only have to click upgrade and it's done for free.

We already have an iPad 2 so she can have our one and we can get an iPad 3.

Secret ballot is going ahead :D but sure its going to be very obvious in September when half arrive in with ipads and the other half arrive in with books.

Em, I don't think that's QUITE how it works! ;):D

850 euro is crazy for an ipad. Are they "special" ipads? did it go to tender?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,128 ✭✭✭cynder

850 is for iPad 2, ebooks, insurance and iPad hard cover, it's estimated ATM.

ah, ok for everything it is not as bad but still a lot for parents to have to pay out.
I have one of the new ipads and tbh it is more or less the same as a big phone.
