Why did Alonso leave? It seemed clear he loved the club. As I remember it, the rumours were flying around that after his injuries Rafa was looking to sell him and bring in Gareth Barry and Alonso was none too happy. That last season it seemed he knew he was leaving and played out of his skin. Do ye think he'd ever come back if maybe he won a few trophies at RM and decided to move on?

I think we all would - would be a powerful combination.

My dreams would involve a Suarez, Torres partnership also :(

It was more to do with them falling out because Alonso's wife was pregnant and nearly due and he didn't want to travel to Milan to play Inter as far as I remember.
I think that's what set things off. I'm open to correction on this

She went into labour and Alonso wanted to stay for the birth.

It's always tough watching Alonso playing for Madrid - like seeing an old girlfriend strolling around town with her new fella.

Strange to see Arbeloa getting his game as well - still seems to be doing a solid & unspectacular job

As a signing he reminds me of Ben Arfa to Newcastle. Lots of talent but questionable attitude. Great value though and if it works out, he is just what we need

Ben Arfa has always been far more talented than Drenthe, and for Ben Arfa it was more a case of playing for the team instead of being so individualised in style as well as outlook at the game. Somewhat like Quaresma except Quaresma will never, ever change and has fallen out of favour for that reason alone with so many coaches around Europe.

IF we do sign Drenthe, I'd give it 2 seasons maximum before we move him on.

So who is on people's wishlist for this summer in the transfer market for Liverpool?
Try keep it as real as possible :)

Liverpool sign 16-year-old Dan Smith for a reported £300,000 from Crewe Alexandra according to the BBC

would ye have joe cole back? seems to have found form.

personally, i dont think he's up to the level we aim for.

and if we move him on, what do we value him at? like we got him for nout to hard to judge.

I'd have him back. Useful squad player if he didn't mind not playing every game. Getting to that age where he could start passing on a few things to the youngsters too.

I'll sound what I hate, a cliched footy fool :D Time and space on the ball. He isn't offered that in the EPL. While there are some very defensive teams in France, there aren't many highly quality defenders, at a push there are only a handful I'd rate personally and who'd fit in comfortably in the EPL. That plus his wages... I'd get rid off him asap.

Hopefully QPR or whoever else (I see wanting a move back to London), if they do stay up would be stupid enough to stump up something close to £5M for him despite his age.

Nope would not have him back. Have not forgotten the sight of him on the pitch puffing and wheezing, coupled with his utter lack of pace and effort.

He has not been the massive success in France that some of the media would like people to believe. He has scored one goal more in the French league than he did in the Premier league for Liverpool, and a couple of cup games against weaker teams have padded out his stats a lot in terms of goals.

He also seems to struggle badly with fitness and the pace of the game.

He has had 26 starts and 11 sub appearances since going to France. But of his 26 starts, he has been subbed off 20 times.

To be fair I think we're best off letting him go. He's on fairly monstrous wages and I don't see him offering that much. If he's used as a squad player he's only going to get in the way of the likes of Henderson and Shelvey's development.

I would imagine we would probably accept an offer of 1p if a club could take him off our books. Certainly can't see us getting more than a couple of million anyway

If Arry is still at Spurs he may turn up there?
I can't see QPR going for him while they have Taarabt.

Totally agree. He was nothing more than a washed up has been when the club bought him and decided to put him on pretty big wages. He was decent years beforehand but those days are long gone and all he is getting by on is his name thanks to the BS way the British media continue to laud has beens long after they have ceased to be a decent player.

The sooner he is off the books and stops being an utter waste of the club's money the better.

From the few stats I've seen he generally was taken off with 20 - 30 minutes left and when he was coming on it was for the last couple of minutes....... not seen any of Lilles games but make what you will of it.

Do ya really have to ask me of all people as to who I would want from that Lille team? :D

I don't think Lille will want to keep him though, so either Liverpool find some other club to take Cole, or they will be stuck with him.

Don't want to see Joke Hole back next season.

As others have said, he has nothing to offer at this stage & would only possibly impede the development of younger players.

Completely forgot about his fitness issues for us. Put some energy into the first 10, 20 mins of a match for us (I'm being kind) and just completely trail off afterwards. Only the Arsenal game (someone can correct me wrong if he actually impressed in any other notable game) did he ever show consistent quality for a somewhat long spell during a single game for us. I'd rather have Luis or Yossi back before having him!

He did have a couple of very good games for Lille midway through the season that had me doubting my judgement of him but other than that, all English media hype over rather average performances.

Well over the past few seasons they have had some pretty good players leave for very realistic prices that I would have loved to have seen at Liverpool.

Players like Sow, Raimi, Cabaye, and Bastos. None of those players went to clubs that Liverpool could not have competed with, similar to how the likes of Turan, Defour, Toulalan etc all went in recent times for very modest fees.

Shaqiri is another that was sold for a very low price, but seeing as Bayern were the buying club it is easy to see why he decided on them.

To me it suggests that we simply are not competing for those players or similar types and are just looking closer to home for the majority of signings which end up costing many many times the amount of the foreign counterparts.

To put our spending into context. Sow, Raimi, Cabaye, and Bastos combined cost €44m or roughly £36m. Andy Carroll on his own cost only £1m less at £35m.

The other players I wanted from that Lille team over the past few seasons have gone for pretty cheap prices, so other than Hazard they have nobody I would be desperate to see at Liverpool.
