Was driving in Rome (was I mad or what) and a moped hit the side of the car as I turned. A bit of damage to the hired car, moped driver fine, police came but no further action- no fine, etc.

Now I have excess insurance, so will recover that. My question is this:

Do I have to declare this as a claim to my own insurance company back home? Or more to the point, if I want to change companies next time my renewal comes up?

    Was it your fault?

Didn't you cover the cost of the repair from the insurance you paid on the hired car? If yes, then it should be done and dusted, you damaged something, you paid for the repair, it's over. I wouldn't see any reason why I should be going to my own insurance company telling them I had an accident with a car I had a separate insurance for, at the end of the day it's expensive enough.
