As above lads, I'm considering a 2002-2004 Renault megane. Having read up on various sites though, I'm still 50/50 on whether to risk one or not!

Has anyone here any first hand experience with them? I'm also open to other suggestions along the same lines :). Cheers!

They are a mine field, some are cursed with electrical problems, a few are not. The Phase II facelifted model from 2006/2007 onwards were much improved.

Leaving aside the numerous reliability issues that you have no doubt heard of, as a car I find them very flimsy and full of cheap plastics. They are not especially nice to drive either IMO.

Thanks lads, I'm looking to get something a bit different to my own 1.4 focus whilst trying to avoid the usual golfs

The most common problems on them are:
    • Ignition coil packs.
    • Electric window regulators (they eat these).
    • Credit card style key.

If you want something a bit different then maybe look at an Alfa Romeo 147.

Well, assuming its a MK1 Focus you have. You already have one of the best handling and reliable cars of its class so anything else will simply not be as good.

If your after something more powerful then the Focus(the low power of the 1.4 is about its only fault) then have you looked at Astra's?

My focus is retiring to a scrap heap in the coming week, it really is beyond economic repair :(

Believe it or not the Astra was next on my list :) As much as I'd love one, I could never afford the insurance on the 147 (youngish male driver ).
